3 WELCOME TO A NEW FEELING OF HOME Since 1863, design, innovation and craftsmanship have made Morsø synonymous with the feeling of home. That particular warm, comfortable feeling continues to be the core element, in the vast range of products within the lines of Kitchen, Dining and Living. Christensen opens up an Iron foundry in Nykøbing Mors laying the foundation to the Morsø Iron Foundry A/S we know today As of January 1st the foundry becomes a limited company by the name of A/S N. A. Christensen & Co King Christian X honours A/S N. A. Christensen & Co. with the title of By appointment to the Royal Danish Court The renowned architect and furniture designer Kaare Klint creates the Klint-stove for A/S N. A. Christensen & Co A/S N. A. Christensen & Co. initiates a collaboration with the designer Sigvard Bernadotte that lasted until During the years many new and exciting products came to light A/S N. A. Christensen & Co. has now become one of Europe s four biggest suppliers of cast iron kitchenware The Architect Fister Bang creates the new generation of innovative cast iron stoves, that we know today as The collection becomes one of A/S N. A. Christensen & Co. s most biggest successes after the oil crisis A/S N. A. Christensen & Co. creates the 1400 series that remains popular today A fruitful collaboration with the designer Robin Levien has begun. New popular collections of stoves with the latest technology are created A/S N. A. Christensen & Co. change the company name to Morsø Jernstøberi A/S Morsø Jernstøberi A/S is awarded with the Regional Initiative award by The Confederation of Danish Industry (DI) for creating local growth Monica Ritterband creates the 7600 collection. In 2010 the collection is awarded with the prestigious international design award Red Dot Award Designer Klaus Rath creates the futuristic and innovative BBQ Morsø Forno Morsø Jernstøberi A/S launches Kitchen, Dining and Living a new category with vases, candlesticks, knives, cutting boards and much more.

Through their unique craftsmanship, these designers master the art of shaping the homes of people all over the world, by seeking out the perfect balance between a practical purpose and the emotional value that is intrinsic to every Morsø creation. To successfully achieve this through 164 years, is not only about craftsmanship and creativity, but also the art of staying true to an ideal through a world that is ever changing. But more than anything, it is about people - not only those who create our products, but also the ones who choose to make Morsø a part of their home and their life.

14 A FEW WORDS ON QUALITY When you find yourself trying to determine the quality and craftsmanship of a product for your household, the obvious things to focus on would be functionality, material and design. These attributes are important, and only more so, depending on the size of the price tag attached to it. But is quality only limited to these obvious things, or are there more and less obvious ways to determine quality? When trying to describe the different qualities in a another person, quality becomes a much more emotionally driven term. To be caring, honest, hardworking or strong, are all qualities we would appreciate in a person, but in some cases, these emotional attributes are just as viable when it comes to the quality of an item that is to be part of our home. How often will you hear yourself describing material things such as furniture as being inviting, an old kitchen knife as having soul or a fireplace as being warm and comforting. When you think about it, those attributes does not sound so different from the emotional qualities we appreciate in a person. With regards to any item you ll find on the following pages, there is no questioning the obvious qualities such as craftsmanship, design and functionality, or that they all go well beyond the price tag. And whatever emotional sense of quality you are looking for on top of that, there is always one you ll be sure to find with any Morsø product. That s the quality of making you feel at home.

42 THE ART OF GREAT DESIGN The most immediate difference between art and design, is that design is always made with some practical purpose in mind. Art will often serve a purpose as well, but mostly one that is reserved for those who are either able to perceive it in a way that is useful to them, or at least to get some sort of intellectual, or emotional satisfaction from it. Another difference, is that since art is both very subjective to personal taste and does not have a definitive outcome, there is no way of determining if it works or not, or to be a bit cheeky, if it s good or not. When we talk about the quality of design though, it s a lot easier to determine, just by looking at whether it serves a particular purpose to satisfaction and/or if it adds a new and innovative aspect to it. This being anything from innovative engineering that makes the design more effective, to new and unique material or colour, that may turn an otherwise primarily handy item, into something that is also beautiful to behold. Funny thing is, that the second we add sort of emotional value, like the perception of beauty, we slowly start making our way back towards the difference between art and design - and at the end of the day, that s what we ve been doing with every single Morsø product, from the first cast iron stoves to the latest in kitchen, dining and living. What classifies as good design to us, is how well it serves a certain purpose. And what classifies as great design, is when good design it is able to add emotional value to whatever purpose it was meant for, thus placing itself on that finely edged line between art and design. That s the art of great design.

60 In 1853, the young N. A. Christensen left his occupation as a bookkeeper to begin his iron foundry adventure an adventure that took its beginning in Nykøbing Mors. Despite fierce competition from other foundries in larger towns, the small handful of blacksmiths, turners and joiners would create an icon that would come to extend far beyond this North Jutland town from which it sprung. It was an icon created through innovation, based on design, quality and fine workmanship. And thus, it will forever be sitting pretty in Danish homes as well as out in the great wide world.
