A House of Order Janene Barker Holmstead Page 1 of 6 Create Spiritually before you Create Physically Your Plan Gospel Principles * During the earth s creation, all things were created spiritually before they were created physically upon the earth. * First spiritual, secondly temporal, which is the beginning of my work; D&C 29: 32 Spiritual Creation is the first and the most important part of the planning process. Ideas, thoughts, visions, and dreams are all part of making a spiritual plan. Our best example is during the earth s creation when the Lord created all things spiritually before they were created physically upon the earth. In your desire to have a better organized home, this is the first step. Your spiritual creation will take patience. You must create your home spiritually or you will not be as effective and you may even give up because you have become overwhelmed. A plan will give you the vision to keep going. You will need paper and pencil and/or a computer. I like the computer because I can make corrections, additions or deletions easily if new ideas or applications come to me. Step 1 Ponder & Pray: See if you can recognize the create spiritually step in the following story: Some people might think home organization would be beneath the Lord s help. I want to bear witness of the countless times I have received answers to my prayers about organization. It works like this. I become aware of an area in my home or with clients that needs attention; clutter accumulates easily, or the space isn t as serviceable as I thought it should be. Before I change anything I observe the situation and try to think of a plan. Then I ponder and pray, asking about a solution. It might take a while, but the answer actually comes. It comes as an idea that wasn t there before. When the idea comes, I ve learned to recognize the sweet witness of the spirit that the Lord was mindful of me and my concerns. Pray about your plans. Then wait. A thought will come to confirm your plan or give you a new plan.
Page 2 of 6 From Elder Carl B. Cook in the April 2013 Friend: page 37 Heavenly Father loves me, and He loves you. When you have problems in your life, remember to pray and also to think about what plan you will have after your prayer. Heavenly Father will always guide you. Step 2 Dream: Sit quietly with your eyes closed and create in your mind your ideal home. Dream about how that home would feel. Don t be concerned about the costs. This is not the time to imagine a different home. Keep your thoughts about the house in which you now live. These thoughts and ideas become your goals. When you have a vision of your dream home, write down the answers to the following questions: *What feeling do I want here? Describe it. *What do I see? Describe it. *What activities do I see the family doing? List them. *What things are priorities in our life now? List them. *How does each room look? Write down your impressions. Now stand up and look around the house. Note on paper, what you see that doesn t fit your vision. That list becomes your map for action; your spiritual blueprint.
Step 3 Plan: Page 3 of 6 Choose the first area which you desire to change. It may be a drawer, a closet, or a whole room. Actually draw the area. Now answer these questions: - How will it look? - What should be in this area? - What is working here now? - Would another activity work better here? When you are designing a room, use these additional questions: - What would I like to see going on in this room? - What projects might happen in here? i.e. homework, bill paying, sewing, toys? - Identify what items you would like in this location - how often you might use them. - If you are planning a kitchen or bathroom, how can you arrange the area so that counters are clear when not in use? - Where would you put the things that are on your counters now? Is there a cupboard or drawer available? - How can young children access items appropriate for them as needed? Step 4 Create Maps: Draw sketches of your floor plan and make enlargements of each room. A. Mark and identify the following areas on the sketches. * Areas that will be centers of activity such as: the work stations for homework, sewing, paying bills, playing with toys, reading and enjoying family time together? * Where do you want your sports equipment? * Do you need a home office space or just a desk against a wall? * Where will the desk go? * What will be in the kid s bedrooms - toys, a desk for homework, sport shoes and equipment? * What goes in the basement? in the Garage? Although all this planning sounds detailed & complicated, if you do these things in your mind & on paper first, you will sail through the actual tasks much easier.
B. Identify Prime Locations Page 4 of 6 PRIME LOCATIONS in your home consist of places with easy access for frequently repeated activities in work areas. When you are in a work area, PRIME LOCATIONS are shelves or drawers that are not too high and not too low. At a work station, you would want the most often used items at arm s length. SECONDARY LOCATIONS are for less used items. Those spaces are up high, down low, or in the cupboard behind the more frequently used items. An Example - Benefits of Spiritually Creating Before we moved into our home, I identified Prime Locations in my kitchen. We had a fairly big pantry, so I planned all the food to be in the pantry and all the dishes and cookware and utensils in the main kitchen area. This main area has the sink, counters, cabinets, appliances and an island. Using my diagrams, I continued by deciding that the pancake turners, and other utensils I need most often at the stove, would go in a drawer just to the right of the stove - a Prime Location. The next drawer would be for hot pads and trivets. I decided which drawer would be the most convenient for the flatware, the measuring cups and spoons. I used the Excel program on my computer and had great fun. (See the illustration below.) I printed out several copies and then with a pencil I began to write in the items that would go in the spaces. When I needed to make an adjustment, I either used an eraser or got a new copy and started over. I was able to spiritually create on paper the location of all my kitchen items including pots and pans, china, crystal and serving dishes. The day we moved in it only took an afternoon to have my entire kitchen in order. Yes, I did change a couple of things within a week or so, but the planning stage saved me days on my feet with an aching back. We were able to use the kitchen immediately and did not have to search through dozens of boxes to locate the drinking glasses and the plates. Planning will save you hours in time and effort. Know what you have and plan where it will go.
Page 5 of 6 For every day, frequently used items, plan one motion retrieval with one motion return. Even your secondary space should be well organized so that you can retrieve and return items in very few motions. (See Section House of Order Space Management section.) Plan before you do a thing! Don t shop, don t move, first make a plan! Have you noticed that I have not mentioned going to the store for any bins, boxes or organizers? I know it is hard to wait, but it s still not time for that step. I promise I ll tell you when it is time.
Page 6 of 6 Let s be silly for a minute: You may have a room with a washer and dryer. That is called a laundry room. In planning your house, you would not put the laundry soap in the coat closet. That would mean several steps and potential spills. It would be silly. The laundry soap is best of course, near the washing machine. With the same thinking, if you had a desk in your family room, you would not put the pencils and papers in the garage or the stapler in the bathroom. Seriously: The reason I went through these ridiculous examples is that many times we don t think to plan for the items or equipment we would need with a piece of furniture. You might say, The desk will look great under that window. Is this a desk better described as a décor item and it may not actually be used? If it is a working desk, do you really want light shining in your eyes? What types of things can the drawers hold? What are all the items you would use at a desk? Is there an electrical outlet nearby, and is it adequate for all the electronics you may use on the desk? What other items might you need at the desk? Will those items clutter the top of the desk? Is there a closet nearby or a cabinet or book shelf? When you plan in advance of the physical creation, you will avoid difficult problems later. I have been in homes where simply placing a piece of furniture differently can keep a room more orderly. Clients have spent years wondering why they can t keep a neat home. If you give yourself adequate time to plan, pray and adjust the plans, you will be able to organize much more efficiently. You will not accomplish this in a day. Take time to plan carefully. Now, I suggest you go to the section called Files that Banish Piles. With that system in place you will be ready for Does it Go or Does it Stay, where you will finalize the plan for your space. * * * * * * * *
