2 years with KUBUS It s been 50 years since Mogens Lassen created the Kubus candlestick, and it has long since become a classic icon of Danish design. This momentous anniversary is celebrated with the relaunch of the Mogens Lassen mathematical candlestick collection. Tribute is also paid to the Kubus 4 in the form of a limited edition, numbered 24-carat gold version absolutely the fi nest Kubus that the world has ever seen.

By Lassen was founded by Søren Lassen and Nadia Lassen, the grandson and greatgranddaughter of renowned Danish architect Mogens Lassen. Today, By Lassen carries on his design philosophy in which beautiful, elegant design melds with quality and practicality to create timeless products based on Danish craftsmanship and design.
5 MOGENS LASSEN Architect Mogens Lassen ( ) is today considered one of the pioneers of Danish Functionalism, and his internationally recognised works span the spectrum from buildings to interior decor. Mogens Lassen was fascinated by the possibilities inherent in Functionalist design and by the German Bauhaus design school, whose principles informed many of his most well-known designs.
6 21 years after Mogens Lassen designed the Kubus candlestick, he evolved the collection to become a comprehensive mathematical calculation. He took his inspiration from the Bauhaus school, designing a collection consisting of all of the geometric Bauhaus symbols featuring the Bauhaus integrity and simplicity, and with functionality in mind. 7 70 KUBUS 8 KUBUS 1 LINE TRIANGLE KUBUS 4 CIRCLE 6 CIRCLE Kubus 1 is the point of departure. The inner circle of Kubus 1 determines the height of the candleholders. The edge length of the Line holder is determined by the diagonal of Kubus 1. The height of the Triangle is determined by the diagonal of the Line. The edge length of Kubus 4 is determined by the diagonal of the Line. The diameter of Circle 6 equals the length of the edge of the Triangle, and the height of Circle 6 equals the radius of Circle 6. The inner diameter of Circle 3 equals the external radius of Circle 6. The height of Circle 3 equals the external radius of Circle 3. Kubus 8 is determined by the fact that the radius of the pitch circle equals the space diagonal of Kubus 1.

9 KUBUS The classic Kubus candlestick was designed in Intended as a rebellion against the ornate, elaborate home, it is informed by a sense of functionalism and mathematical precision. The result was the iconic squareshaped lacquered steel frame topped with candleholders, a design today prized and admired the world over for its elegant simplicity. Design: Mogens Lassen Material: lacquered steel, nickel-plated or gold-plated. Dimensions: 7 x 7 cm, 14 x 14 cm (+ 6 cm candleholders) or 23 x 23 cm (+ 6 cm candleholders). Colours: black, white, nickel-plated or gold-plated.

The Line represents clean lines, and more specifi cally it refers to the way in which the candleholders form a line. It was designed in 1983, but has never been in production prior to Today, the highly minimalistic shape and pure appearance fi ts perfectly with the modern Scandinavian style ethos. LINE
11 TRIANGLE Triangle was designed by Mogens Lassen in 1983 and was fi rst introduced in Triangle represents the Bauhaus principle of the Triangle, and like the rest of the collection it is characterised by its sharp-edged shape and simple design. 12 CIRCLE Design: Mogens Lassen Material: lacquered steel. Dimensions: 8 x 4,5 cm (+ 6 cm candleholders) or 16 x 8 cm (+ 6 cm candleholders). Colours: black or white. Circle was designed by Mogens Lassen in 1983 as part of the mathematical candlestick collection. It was never put into production, but could be seen as a one-of-a-kind piece at a café close to Mogens Lassen s home north of Copenhagen. The round shape and sharp edges make Circle absolutely unique and serve to complete the fantastic collection of candlesticks designed no less than 50 years ago.

14 BOWL The Bowl is inspired by Mogens Lassen s original sketches and the application of the combined Bauhaus principles. A beautiful and aesthetically pleasing object in itself, the Bowl can be used to hold fruit, sweets, or simply pure space. 16 STOOL ML50 In 1950 Mogens Lassen designed the Stool ML50 in mahogany. He took inspiration from the stools used by the shoemakers of the past, and brought the light, elegant look to the creation of this sculptural mahogany three-legged stool. Today, the Stool ML50 is manufactured in Denmark and is available in a range of woods as well as in a modern, edgy fi breglass version. Original sketches of the Stool ML50 from 1950.

19 ML33 Unique craftsmanship not only makes the ML33 an inviting place to sit, it also showcases Mogens Lassen s fl awless sense of comfort and design. ML33 was originally designed for Fritz Hansen and one of the original chairs in cane from 1933 is on permanent exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen. Original sketches of ML33 from 1933.
20 ML33 Today ML33 is available in a beautiful leather version and two different kinds of fabric from the Danish manufacturer Kvadrat. ML33 is, as always, hand-upholstered in Denmark, and all pieces are numbered, creating an entirely unique chair for which design and quality are in focus.
