1 Silent e Puzzlers Congratulations on your purchase of the Really Good Stuff Silent e Puzzlers, a set of puzzles to help your students master the differences between the short vowel pattern found in CVC and CCVC, and the silent e spelling patterns. Meeting Common Core State Standards The Really Good Stuff Silent e Puzzlers aligns with the following English Language Arts Standards: Take the puzzle pieces that make up the word plane. Hold up the piece that reads plan and ask the students to read the word. Review with them what happens to the sound of the vowel when an -e is placed at the end of this word. Put the pieces together in the frame and read the completed word: plane. Turn the puzzle over so students can check their work by looking for the matching pictures of an airplane. Foundational Skills Phonics and Word Recognition RF.1.3.c Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long-vowel sounds. RF.2.3.a Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. This Really Good Stuff product includes: 25, Two-Piece Puzzles 4 Puzzle Frames 1 Storage Box This Really Good Stuff Teaching Guide Managing Silent e Puzzlers Using baggies, put all the puzzles for each vowel sound in their own baggie: all the a puzzles in one baggie, and so forth. When using a puzzle at a literacy center, be sure to demonstrate how to store the materials in the box and leave the center tidy when the activity is complete. Visit our Web site to download Really Good Stuff Teaching Guides. Introducing and Modeling the Silent e Puzzlers The Silent e Puzzlers help students practice reading final -e words. Students are presented with sets of two-piece puzzles; one piece has a short vowel word, the other piece a picture of a silent e word with its ending -e on it. Take out the student reproducible. Together with the students, complete one of the silent e equations: plan + e = plane. Tell them to record their puzzle results on the recording sheet after each puzzle. 3 Short Vowel Word Family Puzzlers Congratulations on your purchase of this Really Good Stuff Short Vowel Word Family Puzzlers, a handson activity that reinforces the recognition of common spelling patterns. Introducing Short Vowel Word Family Puzzlers Take out both of the /a/ pattern puzzles and one puzzle frame. Meeting Common Core State Standards The Really Good Stuff Short Vowel Word Family Puzzlers aligns with the following English Language Arts Standards: Phonics and Word Recognition RF.K.3b Associate the long and short sounds with common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels. RF.K.3d Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ. RF.1.3b Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words. RF.2 Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. This Really Good Stuff product includes: 40 2-piece Puzzles (80 pieces total) 4 Puzzle Frames Storage Box This Really Good Stuff Teaching Guide This set of puzzles includes 20 of the most common short vowel patterns (from the research of Wylie and Durrell). The puzzles are color-coded by vowel sound. Each word family has two different puzzles to complete. Each puzzle is self-checking; the puzzle when properly completed will illustrate the word written on the puzzle. Tell your students that the objective here is to put the beginning sound (onset) of a word together with a short vowel patterned ending (rime) in order to make a real word. They will know they are correct if the picture of the completed puzzle matches the word. Working with your students, put together each puzzle, using the frame as a work place. Students may record their work or make up their own words and pictures on the student reproducible. Play Concentration Select 8 pairs of word family puzzle pieces. Put them in a 4 x 4 grid. Have pairs of students play Concentration. Managing Short Vowel Word Family Puzzlers For easier management, place all the puzzles of the same word family in their own baggie. When using puzzles at a literacy center, be sure to demonstrate how to store the materials in the box and leave the center tidy when the activity is complete. 7 CVC Puzzlers Congratulations on your purchase of this Really Good Stuff CVC Puzzlers, an engaging set of puzzles that helps students master reading and writing high-frequency CVC words. Meeting Common Core State Standards CVC Puzzlers aligns with the following English Language Arts Standards: each distinct sound and feel each sound in their mouths: ccccccccaaaaaaaattttttt. Put the picture piece in the top of the puzzle frame. (It is imperative that before your students do these puzzles they can identify the letters that match these sounds.) Phonological Awareness FS.K.2.d. Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in CVC words. Phonics and Word Recognition FS.1.3.b. Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words. This Really Good Stuff product includes: 38 Four-Piece Puzzles 4 Puzzle Frames Storage Box This Really Good Stuff Teaching Guide The foundation of word study for beginning readers is teaching them to read and write consonant-vowelconsonant (CVC pattern) words. This basic unit is the building block of written English. It is upon this pattern that larger words are formed. And it is in this pattern that struggling and beginning students can begin to separate the discrete letter sounds and identify these sounds with the corresponding symbols. Separating these sounds into distinct letters is not easy, and many young students and beginning English learners need much repeated practice to master this. Managing CVC Puzzlers Using baggies, put all the puzzles for each vowel sound in their own baggie: all the a puzzles in one baggie, and so forth. When using a puzzle at a literacy center, be sure to demonstrate how to store the materials in the box and leave the center tidy when the activity is complete. Visit our Web site to download Really Good Stuff Teaching Guides. Introducing and Modeling CVC Puzzlers Take out one of the /a/ pattern puzzles and one puzzle frame. Show the students the picture of the cat. Ask them to tell you the sounds they hear: /c/, /a/, /t/. Stretch the sounds out so that the students hear Next, show the students the letters c, a, t (in random order). Ask them which letter represents the first sound in cat. Once they have identified the c, put it directly under the picture in the first position. Continue until the students have identified the remaining letters/sounds as you place them in the puzzle frame. When it is completed, flip the puzzle over to show the students the answer on the back. Next, display the student reproducible. Show the students how to complete the reproducible: each puzzle completed should be transferred to the reproducible by hand. Once you have modeled a few of the puzzles together, place the puzzles in a literacy center or on a table for a small group of students to complete.
