Phonics First Lesson 3-20 Homophones Concept Introduction As students acquire multiple ways of spelling the same vowel sounds and practice these multiple spellings in the auditory portion of the Three-Part Drill, they also need to become aware of the spelling and use of homophones (homo = same, phone = sound). Homophones are two or more words that have the same pronunciation, but different spellings and meanings, such as meet and meat. The different spellings of the homophones in this lesson follow regular phonetic patterns that students have already learned (additional homophones will surface as students learn new spelling patterns). Students must memorize which spelling of the word is associated with which meaning. This is purely based on frequency of exposure, memorization and familiarity with the words. In this lesson, common words that follow the silent-e and vowel team patterns have been selected. It is up to the instructor to select the words to teach that will be most useful to students. An instructor may choose to focus on just a few words now and return to the lesson later for more words, or spend a number of lessons covering many or all of the words. Multisensory Activities: Bingo: use the word family bingo boards (Page 2) Make two copies of each board. One copy will be the used to or the markers, the other copy of both boards will be cut up into individual words, mixed and placed face down on the table in a pile. Take turns drawing a card, reading it and give a definition (or use in a sentence). Whoever has the word, marks their Bingo board (chips, cross out the word, etc.) Play until someone gets a bingo (four in a row; four in a column; four diagonally; four corners; whole card; etc.). Brainspring Page 1 of

Bingo Boards: male meet rode pail here week deer lone made tail plane see beech pane heel seem seam sea loan pale road dear plain heal pain tale weak meat mail hear maid beach Brainspring Page 2 of

Charades: Make one copy of the Charades Cards (below) and ask the student(s) to act out the word on the card for their classmates (tutor) to guess. Challenge: Students demonstrate how they would act out the word s homophone. mail pail pain tail maid plane meet hear see feet deer weak peek beach road rode Brainspring Page 3 of

Go Fish/Memory/Tic-Tac-Toe/Find Your Partner: (Make one copy of the Go Fish/Memory/Find Your Partner Cards on Pages 5-8 and cut apart. For shorter games, use only one page.) Go Fish: Mix the cards (Pages 5-8) and deal 4 to each player. Place the rest face down on the desk. When playing Go Fish, students ask for the match to one of the cards in their hand (example: I have sale as in, This is for sale. Do you have sail, as in The sail of the boat is white? ) If the other player has it, he/she must hand it over. The first player lays that pair to the side and it is the other person s turn. If the other player does not have it, the person who asked picks a card from the card pack. Memory: Place cards face down on the table. Students take turns flipping over two cards. Students say each homophone. If the cards are a match, the student keeps the pair. Play passes to the next player. If the cards are not a match, the cards are replaced and it is the next person s turn. Find Your Partner: Pass out the cards in the deck (one per student) and ask them to "find" their match: sale-sail. Then they would write one sentence using both of their words. Students could also draw pictures for their cards. Illustration really helps with vocabulary and comprehension. Picture This : Using the suggestions on Pages 9-12, discuss the letter differences between any pair of homophones. Use that letter as part of an illustration to help students remember the meaning. 13 Words Activities: (for shorter games, use only one page) Tic-Tac-Toe: (Make one copy of the Dictation Word Cards on Pages 14 and 15 and cut apart.) Play "Tic-Tac-Toe" by placing the cards face down in a pile and choosing two different colored markers (anything except red). The first student would pick a card from the pile, read the word, and their partner would write the word in one of the squares with their marker. Then they would switch roles until all nine squares are filled. The students could also check spelling by showing the card after the word was written. The object of the game is to write three words in a row of your color. Word Sort: (Words and Sort Charts on Pages 14-17) Sort word cards into categories (Magic-e/Vowel Team; noun/verb/both, etc.) Sentence Savvy: (Make one copy of the Dictation Word Cards on Pages 14 and 15 and cut apart) Students select a Dictation Word Card and create a sentence using that word. Students then write the sentence* on lined paper while gluing the word card into the sentence. Challenge: o Ask students to use 2 or more words in one sentence* o Ask students to use these words in questions*, exclamations*, titles*, quotes*, etc. *Remember to only make corrections on phonetic words and Red Words which have already been taught. Race to Read: Cut apart the Dictation Word Cards (Pages 14 and 15) and place in a stack face down. Use a stopwatch to time students as they read the Dictation Word cards one at a time. Record their time. Repeat often as students constantly try to beat their old records. Brainspring Page 13 of

Dictation Sentences Activities: (Make one copy of the Dictation Sentences on Page 19 and cut apart.) Dictation Sentence Match: Give students the sentence parts (Page 19) and match to create correct sentences while practicing fluency and comprehension. Match Me: Give the first part of the Dictation Sentences (starts with a capital letter) to half of your group and the last part (ends with punctuation) to the other half. Students then find their match. Memory: Place Dictation Sentence Cards (Page 19) face down on the table. Students take turns flipping over two cards. Students read each phrase. If the phrases are a match (makes a Dictation Sentence), the student reads the sentence and keeps the pair. Play passes to the next player. If the cards are not a match, the cards are replaced and it is the next person s turn. Sentence Savvy: Students select one part of a Dictation Sentence (Page 19) and create a different beginning/end for that sentence. Students may then write their new sentence* on lined paper while gluing the sentence part card into the sentence. Challenge: Ask students to write a sentence which may come before/after their sentence* Ask students to create questions*, exclamations*, titles*, quotes*, etc. using their sentence part. *Remember to only make corrections on phonetic words and Red Words which have already been taught. More Dictation Sentences Activities: Find the Sound: Make two copies of the Dictation Sentences (Clean Copy) (Page 20). Give one copy of the Sentences and a highlighter to each person. At, One, two, three, Go! both participants race to find and highlight the homophones. Practice reading the sentences. Brainspring Page 18 of

Dictation Sentences: That plane is plain white. The maid made a great cake. Would Joe tell a tale about the tail of a fox? I can hear you from here. Could we meet for a bite of meat? There is a beech tree on the beach. The lone man got a loan. I like to roam the shops of Rome. She rode the bus on the old road. Brainspring Page 19 of
