7 Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes This Really Good Stuff product includes: 15 Shape Name Cards, laminated 45 Two-sided Graphic Shape Cards, laminated Storage Box This Really Good Stuff Instructional Guide Congratulations on your purchase of this Really Good Stuff Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes a set of sorting cards designed to enhance kindergarteners skills for identifying flat- and solid-shapes. Meeting the Standards The Really Good Stuff Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics below. For alignment with other state standards, please refer to our Web site s Standards Match. Geometry K.G.A.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. K.G.A.3 Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, flat ) or three-dimensional ( solid ). K.G.B.4 Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/ corners ) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length). Introducing Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes Before introducing Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes, make copies of this Really Good Stuff Instructional Guide, cut apart the reproducibles, and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our Web site at Flat Shapes Remove the green Flat Shape Name Cards that are appropriate for your students level along with the corresponding Graphic Shape Cards from the Box. Place the Shape Name Cards faceup in a row on the table, and put a draw pile of the Graphic Shape Cards faceup in front of three to five students. Tell each student to draw a Card from the draw pile. Guide students to place their Graphic Shape Card below the correct Shape Name Card. Ask students to explain their sorts. Demonstrate how they can check their work by flipping over the Graphic Card to check the answer. Discuss any incorrect placements. (Note: The answer sides of the Flat Shape Cards have light green backgrounds.) Have students continue drawing and sorting until the draw pile is depleted. Repeat this lesson with each of the remaining groups in the class. Continue these lessons until all students can independently sort these Cards. When students are ready, introduce any remaining flat shapes in the same manner, and continue these lessons until all students can independently sort all of the Flat Shape Cards. Solid Shapes Remove the blue Solid Shape Name Cards that are appropriate for your students level along with the corresponding Graphic Shape Cards from the Box. Place the Solid Shape Name Cards faceup in a row on the table, and put a draw pile of the Graphic Cards faceup in front of three to five students. (Note: The answer sides of the Solid Shape Cards have light blue backgrounds.) Have students continue drawing and sorting until the draw pile is depleted. Repeat this lesson with each of the remaining groups in the class. Continue these lessons until all students can independently sort these Cards. When students are ready, introduce any remaining solid shapes in the same manner, and continue these lessons until all students can independently sort all of the Solid Shape Cards. Individual, Partner, and Small Group Practice Have students use Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes for practice: Review with students how to set up the activity by placing the Shape Name Cards across the top of the workspace and placing the Graphics Shape Cards below the appropriate Shape Name Cards. Remind them to turn over the Graphics Cards to check their choices. Pocket Chart Practice Place the Shape Name Cards in the top pocket of a pocket chart, and put a draw pile of face up Graphics Cards nearby. Have a student choose from the draw pile and place the Graphics Card below the appropriate Shape Name Card on the pocket chart. Instruct students to choose additional Graphics Cards from the pile until they are all sorted. Challenge students to look at the sorted Graphics Cards to see if any are out of place. Once the students feel the placement is correct, choose a student to turn over the Cards to check the work. Math Center Practice Place the Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes at a center. Make copies of the Sorting Shapes Math Center Reproducible, and place them in the center. Review the activity with the class: Demonstrate the steps listed on the reproducible. If necessary, guide students to remove the Cards from the Box, place the Shape Name Cards in a row, sort and place the Graphics Cards, check their answers, and color in stars for each correct placement. Change or add to the Shape Name and Graphics Cards as necessary. Assessing and Communicating Student Progress Make two copies of the Student Progress Reproducible to assess student progress using Really Good Math Sorts - Flat and Solid Shapes. Place select Shape Name Cards across the top of the workspace. Make a face up draw pile of the matching Graphics Cards. Direct the student to place the Graphics Cards under the correct Shape Name Cards. Complete both reproducibles by placing a star next to any shape the student has successfully mastered. Keep one reproducible for your records, and have the student take the other one home to share with parents or caregivers.
