1 Little Pocket Sorts : At Home Congratulations on your purchase of Really Good Stuff Little Pocket Sorts : At Home, a hands-on activity that strengthens your students critical thinking and classification skills. Objective Students organize information in concept sorts. Meeting State Standards This type of practice in concept sorting helps students meet grade-level expectations and prepare for standardized testing. Little Pocket Sorts : At Home can also help improve vocabulary and logical thinking skills. This Really Good Stuff product includes: 48Sort Cards 2 4-Pocket Folders 8 Header Cards 4 Sorting Envelopes This Really Good Stuff Activity Guide Model the Activity Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with students. Place the Sort Cards in a stack picture side up and put the Header Cards into each slot of the pockets in a Pocket Folder. Explain to students that they will name the items pictured in the Sort Cards and then think about which room they would most likely be found in a house. Take the top Sort Card, name it, and state where you would find it in a house. This is a blender. A blender belongs in the kitchen. Place the Card in the corresponding pocket of the Pocket Folder. Take another Card and ask students to help you sort it. Some items may be sorted into more than one category. For example, a bookcase is sometimes found in a bedroom and other times in a living room. Depending on the language level of your students, encourage them to explain their reasoning and describe the function of each item. Continue sorting until you have used all the Cards. Naming and classifying household items into specified categories is an important part of vocabulary and concept development. Using the colorful 4-Pocket Folders and Sort Cards, students have fun identifying objects and then sorting them into their appropriate rooms in a house. English language learners benefit from this type of activity, as they learn new vocabulary and use language to describe their classification process. Through repeated play, describing and classifying household items becomes automatic! Managing Little Pocket Sorts : At Home Photocopy the Little Pocket Sort instructions on the back and laminate for repeated use. Separate the Sort and Header Cards into the appropriate categories and store in the Sorting Envelopes. Use the tabs on the Envelopes to label the categories. When finished, store all materials in the Plastic Bag. When using the activity at a literacy center, be sure to demonstrate how to store the game parts and tidy the center when the activity is complete. Introducing Little Pocket Sorts : At Home Little Pocket Sorts : At Home provides a fun setting for students to practice identifying and sorting pictures of common household items into different categories. The two-sided Sort Cards have up to 13 exemplars each of items that belong in the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living room. Each Sort Card has a picture on one side and a word on the other, making it possible to reinforce both concept and vocabulary development skills. The Header Cards fit neatly into the slots of each pocket in the Pocket Folders, making for a closed sort that is easy to manage and check. Once all the Cards are sorted, take them out and review each category separately. Talk about any items that could be sorted differently. Turn the Cards over and read the words with your group. As an alternative, have students sort using the word side of the Cards. Take a Card, read the word, and ask students to say where that item belongs in a house. Continue until all the Cards are sorted. After demonstrating the sort, have students sort independently, either in pairs or individually, using one to two Pocket Folders. Objective Students identify and sort pictures of common objects into shape categories. Meeting State Standards This type of practice in concept sorting helps students meet grade-level expectations and prepare for standardized testing. Little Pocket Sorts : Shapes can also help improve vocabulary and logical thinking skills. This Really Good Stuff product includes: 48Sort Cards 2 4-Pocket Folders 8 Header Cards 4 Sorting Envelopes This Really Good Stuff Activity Guide Model the Activity Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with students. Place the Sort Cards in a stack picture side up in front of you and put the Header Cards into each slot of the pockets in the Pocket Folder. Explain to students that they will need to identify and name the underlying shape of each object pictured in the Sort Cards. Take the top Card, name it, describe it, and tell why it belongs in a specific shape category. This is a sandwich. The bread is cut into triangles, so it belongs in the triangle category. Place the Card in the corresponding shape pocket of the Pocket Folder. Take another Card and ask students to help you sort it. Encourage the use of descriptive language by asking students about their classification process. Continue sorting until you have used all the Cards. Differentiating and describing the attributes of common objects is an important part of vocabulary and concept development. Using the colorful 4-Pocket Folders and Sort Cards, students have fun identifying the underlying shape of common objects. Through repeated play, classifying objects into their shape categories becomes automatic! Managing Little Pocket Sorts : Shapes Photocopy the Little Pocket Sort instructions on the back and laminate for repeated use. Introducing Little Pocket Sorts : Shapes Little Pocket Sorts : Shapes provides a fun setting for students to practice identifying and sorting pictures of common objects into their shape categories. The two-sided Sort Cards have 12 exemplars each of objects that can be classified into one of four shape categories circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Each Sort Card has a picture on one side and a word on the other, making it possible to reinforce both concept and vocabulary development skills. The Header Cards fit neatly into the slots of each pocket in the Pocket Folders, making for a 4-category closed sort that is easy to manage and check. Once all the Cards are sorted, take them out and review each category separately. As an alternative, have students sort using the word side of the Cards. Take a Card, read the word, and ask students to imagine that object and then predict which shape it would most logically take. This type of activity is excellent for critical thinking skills, as not all objects take one form and students must describe their classification process. After demonstrating the sort, have students sort independently, either in pairs or individually, using one to two Pocket Folders. 5 Little Pocket Sorts : l-blends Model the Activity Congratulations on your purchase of Really Good Stuff Little Pocket Sorts : l-blends, a hands-on activity that strengthens your students phonemic-awareness and phonics skills. Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with students. Select four l-blends to practice and gather their corresponding Sort and Header Cards. Place the Header Cards into the slots of each pocket in the Pocket Folder. Decide on which side of the Cards to sort if your group needs practice discriminating sounds, use the picture side, and if your group needs practice with spelling patterns, use the word side. Once you determine the needs of your group, place the Cards face up in a stack in front of you. For example, if you are using the picture side, place the Cards in a stack picture side up. Explain to students that they will need to identify the beginning l-blend sound in each of the picture Cards and place it into its corresponding pocket. Objective Students distinguish among beginning l-blend sounds in words. Meeting State Standards This type of practice in distinguishing among beginning l-blend sounds helps students meet grade-level expectations and prepare for standardized testing. Little Pocket Sorts : l-blends can also help improve spelling and phonics skills. This Really Good Stuff product includes: 60 Sort Cards 2 4-Pocket Folders 12 Header Cards 6 Sorting Envelopes This Really Good Stuff Activity Guide Distinguishing among beginning l-blend sounds is an important part of phonemic awareness. Using the colorful 4-Pocket Folders and Sort Cards, students have fun identifying and sorting pictures and words with the beginning l-blend sounds. Through repeated play, isolating and identifying beginning l-blends in words becomes automatic! Take the top Card, name its picture or read its word, and ask in which l-blend category it belongs, comparing it to the beginning sounds of the picture cues on the Header Cards. Does cloud start like black, clown, flag or sled? Once students name the correct category, place the Card in that pocket. Continue sorting until you have used all the Cards. Managing Little Pocket Sorts : l-blends Photocopy the Little Pocket Sort instructions on the back and laminate for repeated use. Separate the Sort and Header Cards into their l-blend categories and store in the Sorting Envelopes. Use the tabs on the Envelopes to label the categories. When finished, store all materials in the Plastic Bag. When using the activity at a literacy center, be sure to demonstrate how to store the game parts and tidy the center when the activity is complete. Introducing Little Pocket Sorts : l-blends Little Pocket Sorts : l-blends provides a fun setting for students to practice isolating and distinguishing among the beginning bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl sounds in pictures and words. The two-sided Sort Cards have 10 exemplars each of words that begin with each of the l-blends. Most of the Cards have pictures on one side and words on the other. Use the side with picture cues to build phonemic-awareness skills and the side with words to build phonics skills. The two sets of Header Cards, which display both target letters and picture cues, fit neatly into the slots of each pocket in the 4-Pocket Folders, making for a 4category closed sort that is easy to manage and check. Once all the Cards are sorted, take them out and review each category separately. If using the picture side of the Cards, show students how to check their answers by turning over and reading the words on the back. After demonstrating the sort, have students sort independently, either in pairs or individually, using one to two Pocket Folders.
