To grab the children s interest and create the wow factor in your classroom transform the role play corner into a pirate ship, add dress-ups and accessories such as maps, binoculars, telescopes, treasure chest with gold coins and jewels, a soft toy parrot, a pirate flag and netting. Leave A Log Book see Ship s Log Book (cover & inside page -copy enough for the week and a words to help them write page to go at the back) - the children s imagination will do the rest! 1 P a g e

5 Dress-ups From a hypermarket/large supermarket or a market buy inexpensive white or stripy T-shirts and shorts/tracksuit pants/dirndl skirts all with an elastic waist and with a good pair of scissors make them look raggedy. Buy offcuts of material in red or black and cut them into headscarfs, bandannas, neckties. Cut a narrow length of red fabric to wrap around for a sash/belt or an old dressing gown belt will do. Ask your mums if they could donate any bling jewellery. It is amazing what you can find at the equivalent of a local discount or pound store. Daiso Japanese Stores are great for sourcing bits and pieces. To make a bandanna Take a square of material and fold into a triangle. Take the points of the triangle to your left and right in both your hands, tilt your head forward, place the long side of the triangle against your forehead and tie a knot in the back. Tuck the loose corner under the knot. 4 P a g e

6 Eye patch make your own Google: Pirate Eye Patch Template for lots of choices. Print template on thin card, cut out individual eye patches and punch out the circle for holes to thread elastic string through and tie. 5 P a g e

Accessories Binoculars - either purchase plastic toy binoculars or make binoculars from kitchen roll holders Run a line of glue down the length of one tube, then press the tubes together. Wrap rubber bands around the tubes to hold them in place until the glue has dried. Tip: Double-sided tape can be used in place of the white glue. 9 Soft Toy Parrot or Friendly Croc. Ask your parents if anyone has a parrot, crocodile in a box at home designated for the charity shop. Perhaps they would like to donate to school instead. You never know.. 13 Netting You can buy fishing net décor in different colours from a craft shop. Click on the netting to follow the link to Amazon. Just great to have in the classroom - blue or white nets to add to a seaside, fishy, underwater theme, green nets to add to a forest theme or yellow nets to add to a spring/easter theme etc. Hang things from them, drape them in the role play area or use them to add texture to display boards. A pirate flag Get the children to design their own flag template below. Use black construction paper cut into a rectangular shape. A3 size paper is perfect. Children could either paint on their design using white paint or draw and cut out their design from white construction paper and glue it on to the black background. 12 P a g e
