4 Teaching notes The aim of this activity is for students to practise using town vocabulary and prepositions to describe locations to their partner. Having completed the matching exercise on p.1 to revise the names of places in town, students work in pairs and should each be given their own copy of Plan 1. Read through the instructions on the plan to set the scene: A prize has been hidden in one of the places on this street marked with an. Your partner will decide where. You have to guess its exact location. If you are lucky enough to guess right first time, your prize is After that, the value of your prize reduces by 50 with every guess. You are allowed a maximum of 20 guesses. Partner A then decides the location of the first prize, concealing it from partner B. For the sake of convenience and economy, the cards should ideally be laminated so that students can circle their chosen locations with non-permanent pens and then erase them after each round. Partner B then tries to guess where the prize is located by making suggestions in French. They will need the following key language (with a reminder that de will need to change to du before masculine locations): Devant (le stade) Derrière (l église) Dans (le cinéma) À côté de (la piscine) En face de (la pâtisserie) Entre (le musée) et (l hôtel) Partner A keeps a tally of the number of guesses so that the value of the prize (if any!) can be calculated. Partner B might also like to record his/her guesses to avoid any wasteful repetition. They then swap roles. There can be as many rounds as desired and the overall winner would be the one with the most prize money at the end. For a bit of variety, a different version of the plan, Plan 2, can be used. The ready reckoner below could be projected to help students work out their total prize money. An alternative is to make this a race against the clock. To give the task an added sense of urgency, you could create a scenario, for example, a bomb has been planted in one of these locations and they have three minutes to locate it before it goes off. Or a spy has hidden some vital information and they need to find it before the enemy spies, who know where it is, arrive on the scene you have been told they are only three minutes away! Page 4 of 5
