4 Living History Events Powers-Walker House, Glacial Park No registration required. Drop in any time during the open hours. Archaeological Awareness Sunday, September 16 Noon 4:00 p.m. See a stone grinder, flintknapper, and other demonstrations of prehistoric skills. Try your hand at throwing an atlatl while pretending you are on a prehistoric big game hunt. A mounted cavalryman will also be on hand to explain archaeology of the Little Big Horn site. Archaeologists will describe how prehistoric technologies are discovered and interpreted. Examples of artifacts will be on display, including those found at the Powers-Walker House. Bring your own arrowheads or prehistoric tools for identification by professional archaeologists. Harvest Gathering of 1858 Sunday, November 4, Noon 4:00 p.m. Step back in time to the 1850's at harvest time. Try your hand at corn shelling, grinding corn into flour, or making a corn husk or yarn doll. Witness harvest activities like the baking of bread in the wood-burning cookstove and grinding herbs for winter use. Tour the historic farmhouse to learn more about its restoration, or visit with a Cavalry sergeant and his horse as they demonstrate the weapons of the era used to protect these frontier lands. Paul Litke Living History Open House Twilight Wednesday, October 10, 6 8:00 p.m. Enjoy the twilight ambiance of this 1850's house by candlelight and lamplight while enjoying a fall evening viewing the ever-changing colors in the Lost Valley Marsh. Smell the aromas and see what is being baked in the wood-burning stove. We think of candlelight at the end of the day as peaceful, but have you tried doing detail work in dim lighting? See how the early settlers tried to get the remains of their work done at the end of the day. Landscapes Fall

5 Celebrate O Ktober OAKtober Planting Party! The Big Woods Saturday, October 20 1:00 4:00 p.m. FREE Marengo Ridge, Marengo Bring back the Big Woods of McHenry County! Help us plant over 200 oak trees in the heart of Marengo Ridge! Invite your family and friends to come out and be part of history, as the District works to restore the oak ecosystems that once covered over a third of the county's land mass. Travel along the half-mile trail to the restoration zone where you can help plant trees, learn about our keystone species, play an oak-themed game, listen to music and enjoy a snack. Stop in any time or come for the whole afternoon. Be a part of this historic savanna's fresh start! NOTE: There will be a limited quantity of oak trees for sale by The Land Conservancy of McHenry County. These trees are suitable for planting in your yard or as gifts to family and friends. (Cash or check only.) Donate a Tree! BIG WOODS A LIVING GIFT FOR TOMORROW S WOODLANDS Donate a native tree or shrub in celebration, in memory, or in love of the woodlands. Through this program, we plan to restore and recreate the big woods of McHenry County. Just over one-third of the County s land mass or approximately 143,000 acres was covered by some type of oak ecosystem in Today, less than 18,000 acres remain an oak loss of over 87%, according to The Oaks of McHenry County. Help the Conservation District fulfill its pledge to preserve and restore our treasured woodlands for the enjoyment of future generations. Donations from conservation-minded individuals, youth clubs, organizations, small businesses, and corporations can make this vision a reality. Please note: The location where trees and shrubs will be planted cannot be specified. Each year this will depend on areas of greatest need across the county. Your donations of $50 will purchase and plant 2 native shrubs and/or trees. Donation details at: bit.ly/bigwoods 18 Landscapes Fall 2018

6 About the Artist: Karen s family moved to Woodstock in the late 1950 s and she grew up attending local schools. Art classes were always her favorite studies and she went on to receive a BFA and MFA. Her early work in hand-made paper was included in national art exhibitions and solo shows, leading to participation in her first international show in Europe in 1984 followed by many exhibitions both nationally and abroad. Her work has been recognized with fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright fellowship, numerous awards, and inclusion in many publications. A large installation was acquired by the Smithsonian in A recurring theme in her work is a connection to nature, beginning as early as high school watercolor paintings. Observations of nature and immersion in outdoor activities began very early, and later residencies in Alaska and the West Coast furthered her inspirations as she listened to the land. Karen is currently a studio artist in Woodstock, having returned to McHenry County in Art Exhibit Listen to the Land by Karen Stahlecker September 15-October 14 Artist Reception: Sunday, September 30, 1-4 pm. Glacial Park, Lost Valley Visitor Center I nspired by nature, landscapes, and trees, Listen to the Land is an exhibition selected from two bodies of artwork by Karen Stahlecker. Earlier pieces explore tree motifs created as stylized, ethereal wall pieces that highlight her 30-year career in hand papermaking. More recent wearable art pieces, created with mixed materials, explore local landscapes and other natural objects. These pieces often feature vitreous (hot glass) enamels done on hand shaped copper. Karen s current work is available locally, and to a wider audience online under her brand WillOaks Studio. She will also have a selection of wearable art pieces for sale at the reception on September 30th.
