2 t Sample Calendar May 1-11, 2019 Nature Craft: Enjoy these fun nature-themed activities geared toward adults and older children. This month we offer Beachstone Jewelry. Hunter Boot Tide Pool Walk: Join Capt. Mark on an adventure to shallow watery places. Depending on tide stage we will explore rocky Atlantic shoreline tide pools, or the grassy salt marshes that ring the salt pond. We will look at the seaweeds and the creatures that live in these sheltered areas. A perfect application for the Hunter Boots available from our lending closet! Birding: We visit local hotspots to seek out our fine feathered friends. Outing will utilize one of the Inn vans, our open-air, or perhaps a boat. Naturalist Mark will bring along optics and local knowledge. Solar Sunday: View the sun through our beautiful scope outfitted with a high-end solar filter. This is a safe way to see sunspots on the surface of the sun. Naturalist s Van Outing to Kettle Pond Visitor Center: KPVC is located in a lovely modern building in the woods of Charlestown, which is also the regional headquarters for US Fish & Wildlife. The visitor center features beautiful dioramas and displays that represent various habitats found in the five Rhode Island refuges. Trustom Pond Outing: Trustom Pond US Fish and Wildlife refuge features well-maintained trails that meander through native grasslands, upland forest and eventually to a large coastal pond. Viewing platforms afford fine views of waterfowl and sweeping vistas of the beach and marshes. Mark in the Sea Room for a ration of Grog (the Inn s own delicious recipe) and a look at nautical charts of the area. This is a fine way to understand the nature of our coastline and to learn a bit about tides, reefs and shipwrecks. Walk to Weekapaug Overlook: A quick walk to the overlook at Weekapaug Point, where we use our spotting scope to survey Block Island, Montauk Point, Watch Hill and Fisher s Island. Meet in lobby. S mores at the Fire pit: A crackling fire in the back-yard fire pit and big sky and water views. What could be better than that? Toasting marshmallows and making s mores! Weather dependent. Van Tour to Watch Hill: Our outing to Watch Hill makes for a perfect little interlude in a chilly day. In just over an hour we take a delightful scenic drive around the historic village and down to the stunning lighthouse. Capt. Mark discusses the history of the area and points out areas of interest. Star Gazing: A big dark sky with lots of stars is a memorable part of the Weekapaug experience. Join the Naturalist after dark to spot stars, constellations, planets and the moon.
