2 Overview U.S. Ports of Entry Ports of Entry are officially designated areas at U.S. land borders, seaports, and airports which are approved by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). There are 328 official ports of entry in the U.S. and 13 preclearance offices in Canada and the Caribbean. Port personnel are the face at the border for most cargo and visitors entering the United States. At Ports, CBP officers or Port employees accept entries of merchandise, clear passengers, collect duties, enforce the import and export laws and regulations of the U.S. federal government, and conduct immigration policy and programs. Ports also perform agriculture inspections to protect the nation from potential carriers of animal and plant pests or diseases that could cause serious damage to the nation's crops, livestock, pets, and the environment.
