It is a prospect that fills us with joy. Cooler breezes, deepening hues in sky and land will soon fill our visions as lilting voices of children and visitors from near and far fill the air.

We love the bustle of the Fall, the changing colors and feeling that everyone is returning home to us, even if it just for a season.

That is why we work so hard all year long to create new features and introduce new programs to make your visit more comfortable, inviting and inspiring.

For families we offer handson nature crafts, family-friendly events, and adventuring. For adults, we ve included field trips, workshops, and citizen science activities.

2 Page 1 CENTER NEWS Vol. 14, Issue 2 Message from the Manager The slower, quieter and hotter days of summer will soon recede and our grounds and gardens will once again be filled with people and wildlife. It is a prospect that fills us with joy. Cooler breezes, deepening hues in sky and land will soon fill our visions as lilting voices of children and visitors from near and far fill the air. Birds, butterflies, and other animals already trekking across America will soon make their way here to rest or even stay through the winter. We love the bustle of the Fall, the changing colors and feeling that everyone is returning home to us, even if it just for a season. For you see, EWBC is your home, whether you live here in the RGV, visit a few months at a time, or just for a ~ Marisa Oliva ~ few days. We want everyone who walks through our gates to feel welcome. That is why we work so hard all year long to create new features and introduce new programs to make your visit more comfortable, inviting and inspiring. This season, our staff has put together a variety of programs to bring delight, joy, and wonder to visitors of all ages, and with a variety of interests. For families we offer handson nature crafts, family-friendly events, and adventuring. For adults, we ve included field trips, workshops, and citizen science activities. Teens and adults who want to help wildlife are encouraged to help us with upcoming planting and volunteer days. The EWBC staff and I have been looking forward to this season, but most especially seeing you. Welcome home. Nature Notes: New Outdoor Spaces The EWBC is pleased to offer three new outdoor spaces for nature enthusiasts and school/youth groups to use while visiting our site. The first area is our new Picnic Pavilion which features three picnic tables capable of seating up to 40 children. Rain or shine, the canopy offers cover during picnics and outdoor classes large or small. Our second installation is our Butterfly Garden Water Feature & Swing Bench providing visitors a peaceful spot to relax while enjoying garden views. Located at the entrance to our Children s Garden, it s the perfect spot to watch birds and butterflies at play. And last but not least, we have just completed the installation of the South Pond Picnic and Observation Area. Replacing our southmost overlook, the area includes a picnic table, a cacti garden and benches overlooking South Pond. These additions are some of the many places where visitors can interact with nature and wildlife while on the grounds of the EWBC. We hope you enjoy these beautiful features on your next visit here. Creature Feature: Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) A carnivorous mammal of the family Canidae, the Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) can be found from most of the southern half of North America to the northern part of South America. With it s strong, hooked claws, the Gray Fox is the only American canid that can climb trees to escape predators and to obtain food. Gray Foxes are omnivorous, eating anything from Eastern Cottontails and birds, as well as a variety of fruits. Photo courtesy of J. Chavez The Gray Fox ranges from 29.9 to 44.3 inches in length, and typically weighs 7.9 to 15.4 lbs. Unlike the Red Fox, this animal has a black tipped tail with a black strip running down its back and tail. It also lacks the black feet and the white tipped tail of the Red Fox. Mainly a nocturnal/crepuscular creature, the Gray fox can be seen during the dawn/dusk and night hours in ranches and parks across the Valley, including the EWBC (see photo).

6 Page 5 FAMILY PROGRAMS Vol. 14, Issue 2 Spectacular Saturdays It s a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy nature. On the last Saturday of the month, our doors will open for FREE to the public. Throughout the day there will be puzzles, crafts, games, and guided nature hikes upon request. Binoculars, Children s Garden Play Sets and Junior Ranger Field Packs are available free of charge. NOTE: Free entry does not include fee for concurring programs and activities. Dates: 9/30, 10/28, 11/25, 12/30, 1/27, 2/24 Time: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fee: Free Daisy Scout Day Daisy scouts, make your Daisy Flower grow at the EWBC on Daisy Scout Day as you earn your Rosie, Clover, and Zinni Petals. Learn basic fishing skills, master common fishing knots, and practice casting with a spin-cast rod-and-reel. Learn to identify various game fish as well as baits and lures. Date: Saturday, October 7 Time: 9 a.m p.m. Fee: Free Butterfly Bait Workshop Butterflies are a delight to have in the garden, fluttering from flower to flower. Create a pumpkin planter that is sure to add a spooky, yet beautiful, spark to your decorations just in time for Halloween. Bring your pumpkin and we'll supply the rest. RR. Date: Saturday, October 14 Time: 10 11:30 a.m. Fee: $6 per pumpkin planter Fossil Fright Nothing symbolizes Halloween like skeletons. Come explore the spooky world of skeletons as you learn how fossils are created on this Halloween weekend. Participants will receive a fossil goody bag to take home. RR. Using a color spray technique and leaf patterns, play with a variety of fall colors and designs. All materials and supplies will be provided. RR. Instead of buying new ornaments and decorations this holiday season, make fun and creative ornaments out of recycled materials. RR.
