10 4. SITE DESCRITION 4.1. GENERAL SITE CHARACTER: Habitat classes % cover Broad-leaved deciduous woodland 4,55 Coniferous woodland 1,5 Other land (including Towns, Villages, Roads, Waste places, Mines, 0,01 Industrial sites) Non-forest areas cultivated with woody plants (including Orchards, 7,72 groves, Vineyards, Dehesas) Marine areas, Sea inlets 29,55 Dry grassland, Steppes 7,1 Heath, Scrub, Maquis and Garrigue, hygrana 44,42 Shingle, Sea cliffs, Islets 0,01 Mixed woodland 5,03 Alpine and sub-alpine grassland 0,11 Total habitat cover 100 % Other site characteristics The site is located in the southern part of the island of Evvoia. It contains two distinct areas:mount Ochi with the coastal areas of Cape Kafirefs and otami and the Mandilou islet. Ochi mountain (1398 m) is located NE of Karystos. The most remarkable characteristics of this part of the site are: the extensive area with phrygana and sclerophyllus shrubs (especially Quercus coccifera), the many green valleys with latanus orientalis, the small chestnut forest near the highest peak, and the rivers in which the dominant species are Vitex agnus-castus and Nerium oleander. The marine area of the site is characterized by the existence of posidonia beds, mainly in deep waters (>20 m) and by reefs (along Cape Kafirefs). Both of these ecosystems are in excellent condition. NOTES 1. In Kampos Karystou area there are extensive crops, not described by any habitat type of Annex I. 2. Habitat type 9320 describes areas with Olea europaea and istacia lentiscus shrubs. 3. On Ochi mountains there are extensive patches of teridium aquilinum. 4. There are Erica manipuliflora heathlands, a habitat type not included in Annex I QUALITY AND IMORTANCE: Mount Ochi still holds significant population of large birds of prey like the Bonelli's and Short-toed Eagle. It is also very important for the Eagle Owl, of which 13 pairs are found (a remarkable density). Furthermore, passerines of european interest nest (Woodlark, Tawny ipit, Cretzschmar's Bunting) in significant numbers. The site is also important for migrants, especially birds of prey and other large birds (herons, storks). In the rocky coasts, Shags are nesting in nationally important numbers. Finally, in Mandilou islets there has been recorded Eleonora's Falcon and Audouin's Gull nesting VULNERABILITY The most serious threats include the construction of many wind farms all over the area, the increased urbanization of the town of Karystos and the nearby settlements and the expansion of operating stone quarries. Rock partridge populations have shown great decline, mainly due to hunting. The use of poisoned baits is widespread SITE DESIGNATION: 4.5. OWNERSHI ublic and private. 4-1
