9 4. SITE DESCRITION 4.1. GENERAL SITE CHARACTER: Habitat classes % cover Dry grassland, Steppes 9,37 Other land (including Towns, Villages, Roads, Waste places, Mines, 0,9 Industrial sites) Non-forest areas cultivated with woody plants (including Orchards, 19,92 groves, Vineyards, Dehesas) Mixed woodland 5,68 Coniferous woodland 0,63 Broad-leaved deciduous woodland 38,1 Alpine and sub-alpine grassland 0,36 Heath, Scrub, Maquis and Garrigue, hygrana 17,5 Bogs, Marshes, Water fringed vegetation, Fens 0,03 Inland water bodies (Standing water, Running water) 0,25 Coastal sand dunes, Sand beaches, Machair 0,08 Extensive cereal cultures (including Rotation cultures with regular 7,19 fallowing) Total habitat cover 100 % Other site characteristics aiko Mt is considered to be an extension of Voras mountain range, in fact geologically it belongs to the same massif as Tzena and inovo. It mainly consists of limestones and ophiolites. Its SE part is predominantly sedimentary rocks and is characterized by a multitude of medium height peaks ranging from 1219 to 1650 m. The forests of aiko have been heavily exploited in the past by the inhabitants of nearby villages (coppice mainly). The intensive grazing has also resulted in degradation of the natural environment which only recently (during the last few decades) has started to show signs of recovery. aiko is rich in flowing waters as well as internal draining waters especially in the subalpine meadows where streams flow internally and come out as springs in the foothills of the mountain QUALITY AND IMORTANCE: Agricultural activities in aiko Mt., belong to the past and as a result today, a great variety of habitats exists. The afforestation of many abandoned pastures and of small pieces of formerly agricultural land is now creating a rich vegetation mosaic. Thus, the diversity of habitats that are created is one of the most valuable features of the area. Vegetation structure diversity and the neighbouring of aiko with Tzena Mt and Axios river valley create a suitable habitat for the roe deer and hare as well as for several raptors, most important being the Golden Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard and Lanner Falcon. Additionally, the gentle slopes of the subalpine meadows and small upland wetlands form an interesting landscape. Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurence of the invertebrate Erebia ligea, which is contained to the residential Decree 67/1981, the invertebrate Lycaeides argyrognomon, which is refered to Koomen., van Helsdingen.J Listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates. Council of Europe, Economic Commission for Europe (1991) European Red List of Globally Threatened Animals and lants, Heath J Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. Council of Europe. Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, one taxon is greek endemic, 3 taxa (Dactylorhiza kalopissii, Rosa arvensis, Sempervivum marmoreum) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 3 taxa (Coeloglossum viride, Dactylorhiza sambucina, Lilium martagon) are protected by the Greek residental Decree (67/1981) and 2 taxa (Sideritis scardica, Silene radicosa ssp. radicosa) are Balkan endemics VULNERABILITY The main threat for the forests of Mt. aiko are the plans for ever intensive timber production. The south part of the mountain has been overgrazed and has serious cases of soil erosion. Due to ever increased timber harvesting, a dense road network has been developed and also many hectares have been reafforestated 4-1
10 with conifers. The forests are mainly coppice due to mismanagement of past decades and require special attention in the future SITE DESIGNATION: 4.5.
