9 4. SITE ESCRITION 4.1. GENERAL SITE CHARACTER: Habitat classes % cover Marine areas, Sea inlets 89,12 Heath, Scrub, Maquis and Garrigue, hygrana 6,26 ry grassland, Steppes 0,89 Coniferous woodland 0,41 Non-forest areas cultivated with woody plants (including Orchards, 3,33 groves, Vineyards, ehesas) Total habitat cover 100 % Other site characteristics Three inhabited and five uninhabited small islands, covered mainly by conifers, tall maquis and olive groves. Othonoi islands has extensive sea cliffs and rocky slopes (max. altitude 385 m.) Most of the uninhabited islets are covered by low vegetation on a rocky substratum, ideal for nesting seabirds QUALITY AN IMORTANCE: An important colony of Cory's Shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) is nesting in Tracheia islet, one of the two known colonies in the Ionian Sea. This colony is very important as it works as a "bridge" connecting birds from the Adriatic and Central Mediterranean with Greek populations. Furthermore, at least 15 pairs of Shags nest in rocky coasts, while the five pairs of eregrine Falcons is a very dense population for such a small area. Alpine Swifts are also very common during the breeding season, with at least 150 pairs nesting VULNERABILITY Breeding populations of Cory's Shearwaters are very susceptible to disturbance by tourists and other visitors to the islet they nest. Thery are also threatened by rats, cats and dogs brought by visitors, while competition and predation by the Yellow-legged Gull is another serious threat. Shags are threatened by overexploitation of fish stocks and disturbance by tourist boats, while eregrines are mainly threatened by illegal shooting SITE ESIGNATION: 4.5.
