GENERAL SITE CHARACTER: Habitat classes % cover Extensive cereal cultures (including Rotation cultures with regular 0,36 fallowing) Other land (including Towns, Villages, Roads, Waste places, Mines, 0,12 Industrial sites) Non-forest areas cultivated with woody plants (including Orchards, 1,21 groves, Vineyards, Dehesas) Mixed woodland 13,26 Broad-leaved deciduous woodland 46,82 Dry grassland, Steppes 1,58 Heath, Scrub, Maquis and Garrigue, Phygrana 16,92 Inland water bodies (Standing water, Running water) 1,16 Coniferous woodland 18,59 Total habitat cover 100 % Other site characteristics A densely forested area, stretching along the Greco-bulgarian borders and. This site includes extensive Oak (Quercus spp.) woodland, primary Fagus and Pinus forests, as well as Betula sp. forest, unique in Greece QUALITY AND IMPORTANCE: This site is very important for the Capercaillie and the Hazel grouse which have a very restricted range in Greece. Furthermore, it is home to all woodpecker species found in Greece, including the Three-toed Woodpecker. It is also important for birds of prey like the Egyptian Vulture, the Golden and Short-toed Eagle,the Honey Buzzard and the Common Buzzard and the Peregrine.Hilly country close to Nestos River is important for the Black Stork, while clearings and other open areas host the most significant population of the Ring Ouzel in Greece, and good numbers of the Red-backed Shrike and the Barred Warbler. Finally it is also very important site for the Nutcracker whose range in Greece is restricted to the Rodopi massif VULNERABILITY Increasingly intensive forest management and deforestation are the main threats for the Cappercaillie and the Hazel Grouse. Increased human presence is also another threat, especially for birds of prey.
