9 4. SITE DESCRITION 4.1. GENERAL SITE CHARACTER: Habitat classes % cover Heath, Scrub, Maquis and Garrigue, hygrana 3,1 Dry grassland, Steppes 0,43 Extensive cereal cultures (including Rotation cultures with regular 41,93 fallowing) Other arable land 13,08 Broad-leaved deciduous woodland 21,56 Non-forest areas cultivated with woody plants (including Orchards, 17,27 groves, Vineyards, Dehesas) Other land (including Towns, Villages, Roads, Waste places, Mines, 1,29 Industrial sites) Inland water bodies (Standing water, Running water) 1,33 Total habitat cover 100 % Other site characteristics The site includes part of the mouth of Erythropotamos River, the adjacent cultivated areas, and hilly country covered with oaks. Vineyards, orchards and cereal fields are the main cultivations QUALITY AND IMORTANCE: This site is very important for the Olive-tree Warbler (Hippolais olivetorum) and the Masked Shrike (Lanius nubicus) with significant population of both species nesting. It is also important for farmland birds like the Skylark (Alauda arvensis) and the Black-headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala). Birds of prey like the Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina) and the Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus) are also breeding in substantial numbers (more than 1% of the national population) along with the Roller (Coracias garrulus) and the Bee-eater (Merops apiaster). Finally, significant numbers of Black Storks (Ciconia nigra) and Woodlarks (Lullula arborea) breed in the hilly country. Another potential species of interest is the Levant Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes) that breeds in numbers very close to the criteria of SA designation VULNERABILITY Intensification of agriculture and land reclamation are the main threats. oaching, poisoning and illegal logging of large trees are the main threats to the birds of prey. Intensive use of agrochemicals is the main reason for the decline of all farmland birds, while construction of forest roads poses a threat to the Black Stork and several birds of prey SITE DESIGNATION: 4.5.
