3 Sikhs will bow down infront of the Guru Granth Sahib and give money. Why?

4 In a, everyone sits on the floor with men on one side and women on the other. Why do you think this is? Sikhs sit in front of their holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib.

5 Why do men and women sit separately inside a Gurdwara? Why will they sit lower than the Guru Granth Sahib?

6 A Gurdwara is not just a place of worship. It has study rooms, sleeping areas and a kitchen called a Langar Why do you think this is? The Langar provides free food for everyone. It doesn t matter what religion you are everyone is welcome!! This food is offered free of charge

7 What happens inside the Langar? Why do you think the food is FREE?

8 Why do you think this is? In the main prayer hall there is a large carpeted area. There are no seats or chairs as the sangat (congregation) sit on the floor. Feet must not be pointed towards the Guru Granth Sahib. Men and women sit on different sides

9 What significance does Sangat have in Sikhi? Sangat comes from 2 words Sang = Gathering of people Gat or Gati = Liberation (become One with God) Sangat = Is a gathering of Sikhs to attain liberation to become one with Waheguru (God)

10 Why is the sangat important? Liberation is attained in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and the darkness of ignorance is dispelled. p675 So vibrate continually in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, and the sins you committed shall be erased. p461 I was overflowing with the filthy sins of countless past lives. But joining the Sangat, God made me pure again. p1178

11 Why is the sangat important? Physical: Tan Mental: Man Material: Dhan Vand Chhakna (sharing) Sewa (selfless service) = Helping others Guru Amar Das (3rd GURU) taught the idea of daswandh. This is giving a tenth of surplus money to the community. This money may be used for building schools or hospitals or to help those who are poor or suffering.

13 The Ragis or musicians also sit on a platform. They perform verses (Shabads) from the Guru Granth Sahib. This is called KIRTAN.

14 The Granthi may be a man or woman, they sit behind the Guru Granth Sahib, facing the worshippers. They will often give a KATHA ~ a talk / sermon explaining key teaching from the Guru Granth Sahib.

19 What is Nitnem? Nit Nem: literally means "Daily routine or habit of Naam. Nitnem is a collaboration of different banis (prayers) that were designated to be read by Sikhs every day.

32 A summary of DIWAN (worship) in the gurdwara. 1. There is no particular set day for Sikh worship or DIWAN, Sikhs visit the Gurdwara as often as they can. In UK the most popular day for communal worship is Sunday. 2. Service starts at day break when Guru Granth Sahib is brought from its special room (Sach khand) to main shrine hall. 3. Lesson for day (Hukumnama) from Guru Granth Sahib is a form of guidance and is written up on prominent notice board. 4. On entering the diwan hall worshippers approach the Guru Granth Sahib, bow or prostrate themselves, and make an offering of money or food for use in the langar. 5. They sit down cross-legged, with their feet pointing away from the Guru Granth Sahib. Men and women usually sit separately. 6. Service mainly consists of KIRTAN, singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib by musicians (ragis). The ragis usually accompany the singing with hand drums (tabla) and the harmonium (bajas), and explain the songs before they sing them. 7. Sermons and explanation (Katha) of hymn or passage from scripture by Granthi. 8. ARDAS. Special prayer of petition (request). A reminder to remember God and the Ten Gurus / to keep the teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib and a blessing on the Sikh community and all mankind. 9. During Ardas the blade of a kirpan (knife) is put into the mixture of Karah Parshad. 10. It is first offered to the Guru Granth Sahib, and then distributed to everyone, and eaten with the right hand. 11. After the worship everyone goes to the langar for some food that has been prepared during the diwan by volunteers.

35 Sikhs can also worship at home. It might be more practical if you have a young family or elderly relatives to care for or the nearest Gurdwara is far away! Praying at home means that you can think about Waheguru 24/7. Some Sikhs have their own copy of the Guru Granth Sahib, others may have a book of prayers (GUTKA). Sikhs may invite other round to share in diwan (worship) and langar (free food). Other Sikhs may meet up VIRTUALLY and listen to the HUKKAMNAMA (word of the day), KIRTAN (songs) & KATHA (sermons) via the internet!
