GURDWARA GURU HARGOBIND SAHIB JI This Art Exhibition marks the beginning of a great journey where the community of Leeds artists are invited to come together to produce individual pieces of Art in various forms, telling the story of an iconic Georgian Building, - Potternewton Mansion. The Mansion began its lifecycle 200 years ago next year, built from the fruits of the pre-industrial revolution wool supply chain supplying the Mills in Leeds. Its current use as a Sikh Temple, is testament to the change s it has seen in its long history. This Art explores the buildings uses, its community and its architecture. pg. 1

Michael Cox Michael loves to travel between Yorkshire and the Kent and Sussex coasts in his quest for subjects of interest. We were fortunate to hold onto him for long enough, for him to paint this fabulous water colour of Potternewton Mansion as it would have looked in the early nineteenth century. Michael s paintings are influenced by features such as the way light catches and travels across a subject or the colours within a shaded area, or even just the distortion of a reflection. He does not attempt to record a realistic image of the subject, but enjoys creating work that includes elements observed over a period of time. Organisations/66837-Arts-and-Crafts-Stainbeck-Art-Club Gillian Kempner Gillian s artwork covers two large canvasses. This gives scale to the size of the original estate on which the mansion was built. The first canvas shows the younger Queen Victoria and a mounted Mai Bhago, a Sikh woman who led Sikh soldiers against the Mughals in The children playing at the top of the painting depict the changes in the use of the estate land over the early twentieth century, which included a community park. At the bottom of the canvas, a Baht Sikh gentleman stands proudly, as the current use of the building has become a Gurdwara. The second canvas further alludes to the scale of the original Brown estate, as the successful landowner sits proudly at the foot of his estate, with family, showing his accumulated wealth. pg. 2

Hilary Readman Thread a continuous element This piece explores the historic and cultural links between India and Victorian Britain, a diverse yet intertwined past that links the Sikh community in Leeds with the fabric of the building. James Brown was a wealthy wool merchant and the textiles industries were hugely important in both Victorian Britain and India, and it was this connection that inspired the initial concept for the sculpture. Indian textiles were a major influence on Victorian designers; one of the most commonly used motifs was the elongated leaf which became known as Paisley after the Scottish manufacturing centre that produced the shawls often using this motif. This cross cultural connection through a love of colour and pattern seemed an important link - a continuous element bringing together communities and a shared cultural past. The hand, as an icon, has been used throughout human existence; it exerts a powerful resonance with our sense of self. Our hands are our tools that not only make objects that we need to survive, but create and communicate our innermost ideas and ideals. The hand is a signature for who we are and what we can attain. Neil Shubin, Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5 Billion Year History of the Human Body. Siobhan Maguire-Broad (Morticia) Siobhan has produced a form of art known as a Calotype Process to explore a Victorian form of photographic reproduction. The photographic paper used for this lumen print is at least 40 years old and unfixable so during its development process it needed to be kept completely in the dark to stop it from fading. pg. 3

Lesley Wood These pieces consist of a group of 3 cyanotype contact prints of branches from shrubs and trees from the Mansion grounds. Second group are cyanotype prints from digital photographs of the mansion's interior- windows and staircases. Both of these groups of images are printed onto Khadi paper, which is recycled from cotton rags in India, a practice that provides employment for local people and supports local charities (info at The final set of images are film photographs of interesting trees in the Mansion grounds- Gingko Biloba, Liriodendron Tulipifera and Salix Bablyonica (left to right). It was the practice of Victorian landowners to endow their estates with tropical or foreign trees and foliage. The images are printed onto Surrey Cream using liquid light photographic emulsion, to give a 'retro' effect. pg. 4

Emily Jackson & Amy Scott For these photographers understanding the importance of the orange flag (the Nishan Sahib) at the rear of the building, which is made to be seen from far away as a symbol of Khalsa in the community, was the focal point of their work. The Nishan Sahib is a welcoming beacon of faith and safety to the community and is extremely important. Amy and Emily wanted to show this through the portraits as a way of visually connecting the two as one. The orange glow from the Nishan Sahib s reflection becomes a symbol of protection with the subject bathing in the security it gives. Hannah Voong Hannah s approach explores the play of light in photography. Light is integral to the Sikh faith is a big part of Photography. Hannah s own unique style of photography was well mated with the brief which requested pieces that reflected people and the architecture of Potternewton Mansion. In Sikhism the word 'Guru' is defined as the Light that dispels all darkness. This is a quote that Hannah feels brings her own images and concept together and helped to create a clear link between all her photographs. pg. 5

Harrison France Harrison captures intimate portraits showing the different activities taking place during a Sunday service. The main rationale for the images was to illustrate the artists view from a non- Sikh perspective, illustrated by the distance between the camera and the people. Elements of the building s interior are reflected in these pieces highlighting the buildings Georgian Architecture. pg. 6
