15 LYNN HERSHMAN LEESON DANTE HOTEL IN SECOND LIFE, LIFE SQUARED 2007 Life Squared, 2007 edition of 3 Life Squared is a project that remixes Lynn hershman Leeson s three-decade plus archive inside a virtual setting of san Francisco s Dante hotel in as an animated archive, Life Squared becomes a museum of the future, as an experience in an online world--a prosthetic world of avatars, their buildings and goods raise numerous questions about contemporary experience and that which is real, synthetic, mediated, or technology as- sisted. Documenting the past, we propose, is to actively reshape and rework what remains (of the future). Life squared is a place where anyone, in the guise of an avatar, may encounter such a prospect - of revisiting and reworking the past, using Lynn hershman Leeson s artwork as content. This project is about building an experience in an online world, and it is also a research project investigating themes such as the following: How is a work of art such as a transient installation in a hotel room to be curated by a museum? how is an experience that takes no particular material form to be documented? Memory and document - memory practices and material archives - how they revolve around characters and architectures, stories, scenarios and game play. exhibited Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, S.F. Museum of Modern Art Art of Participation, size variable, original programming with Stanford Humanities Lab. 15
