ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY TEST Electrical resistivity is an intrinsic property of a material that suggests how strongly the material opposes the flow of electric current.

1 ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY TEST Electrical resistivity is an intrinsic property of a material that suggests how strongly the material opposes the flow of electric current. The apparent resistivity of the ground is measured by carrying out electrical resistivity test. This test which was initially adopted to arrive at earthing design for structures is now widely used as one of the tests in geophysical surveys to classify and profile the subsoil after advancements in the testing equipments and data analysis software. The ranges of earthy resistivity values are well correlated to the different earth materials for the interpretation of test results and the subsoil classification can be accurately made when supported with limited bore hole investigations. The general electrical resistivity testing (ERT) procedure involves passing of current to two electrodes (Outer electrodes) and measuring the difference in their voltage at surface using two potential electrodes (Inner electrodes) The most common survey configuration is Wenner array where the spacing between electrodes is kept constant. The spacing is increased with respect to a center line to investigate deeper depth and the depth investigated corresponds to the spacing between any two successive electrodes (d) or half the distance of outer electrodes. The electrical resistivity is obtained using the equation. ρ = 2πdR where R = v/i; ρ = apparent resistivity in ohms-m (Ωm); d = spacing between electrodes (m); R = measured resistance (Ω); v = voltage measured (volts) and I = injected current (Amps) The recent advancement in ERT is multi-electrode (usually greater than 20 electrodes) data acquisition for surveying where a resistivity meter system with an internal microprocessor controlled circuitry together with an electronic switching unit is commonly used to automatically select the relevant four electrodes for each measurement. By this process the ground can be surveyed both vertically as well as horizontally in quick time and a 2D cross sectional resistivity profile of the area under the line of electrodes is obtained after processing using a data inversion software. When many such number of line traverses are done parallel to one another for a site, a 3D profile of the site can be accomplished by interpolation schemes.
