6 Spotlight In the Spotlight Humidity calibration MICHELL INSTRUMENTS research has reported significant progress in its project with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to improve the current high-pressure dew-point generator technology. Michell scientists are co-operating on the project with the NPL, which provides scientific consultancy and assessment services. The project is funded by the UK Technology Strategy Board. The aim of the work is to enable calibrations of water and hydrocarbon dew point to be made at line pressure, outside of national metrology institutes. The research efforts have particular implications for the natural gas industry, especially for pipeline operators, as the ability to perform at-pressure calibrations for both water and hydrocarbon dew point will improve confidence in the measurement of these two gas quality parameters at custody transfer of transmissions pipelines Lowest lifecycle costs. Tanks take it lying down Originally conceived to handle severe pumping applications in the oil and gas industries, Hydra-Cell T Series pumps from WANNER INTERNATIONAL are claimed to have the lowest Life-cycle Cost (LCC) of any high pressure pump in their class. With options available that meet the requirements of API 674, Hydra-Cell T-Series seal-less pumps feature hydraulically balanced, multiple diaphragms in a single pump head. They are designed to replace packed triplex plunger pumps and their associated problems. They are said to provide zero leakage, can run dry indefinitely without causing damage to the pump and can pump abrasive fluids effectively. Wanner says costly seal maintenance is eliminated and because the plungers in the Hydra-Cell pumps never come into contact with the pumped liquid, hence they have a longer service life NHerrington@wannerint.com Workspace modules Ferguson Norge AS reports it has developed a series of NORSOK R-0002 workspace modules, classified for Zone 2 hazardous area rental. The modules have been constructed so they can be stacked and interlocked quickly and easily, with the minimum of personnel required. The modules themselves are reported to be very well built, fire rated A60 and have ISO corner casting. They come in three sizes, a compact 4m, and intermediate 4.8m and the spacious 6m. They are built to the NORSOK Z-015 standard, ATEX directive and EN and the flexible internal layout means they can suit a number of working environments, such as a laboratory or office. Ferguson Group Ltd +44 (0) Niplast reports it has supplied two storage tanks to Suretank Ltd, a leading manufacturer of CCUs (Cargo Carrying Units) for the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry. The tanks, to be used to store sodium bromide and hydrochloric acid in the Caribbean, were commissioned by the customer in polypropylene rather than their usual steel construction, due to the highly corrosive nature of these chemicals. An unusual, but key, design request from the customer was that the Niplast tanks would be able to be transported horizontally within a purpose built mild steel frame based on an ISO container specification. To facilitate shipping from location to location, the empty tanks will be held in the horizontal position via a flanged bolted base and a polypropylene lined cradle. When configuring how to best locate and support the empty tank within the frame, Niplast and Suretank designers had to take into account transportation loads and acceleration factors. Niplast Tanks + 44(0) Major chemical injection order UK flowmeter specialist Litre Meter reports it has shipped six LF05 VFF positive displacement flowmeters to China via a distributor for use in chemical injection applications on an offshore platform. The Atex-certified rotary piston flow meters are used to measure the flow of a number of chemicals including corrosion inhibitor, demulsifier and scale inhibitor. One meter was calibrated for very low flow at cubic meters/hour for fluids with a viscosity of 40 centipoise. The VFF meters are fitted to skids on platforms in the Qinhuangdao oilfield located in Bohai Bay 130 km from the Chinese city of Tianjin. The chemicals are injected at high pressure into pipelines via the skid installed on the well head platform. The chemicals are delivered to the skid through umbilicals from a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel located in the field.
