5 GETTING THERE 05 Swans is located in Wallsend on the north bank of the River Tyne, six miles from the North Sea and only 96 nautical miles from offshore wind park, Dogger Bank. The site is linked to the wider road network allowing easy access to the A1() and A19 trunk roads, as well as Newcastle upon Tyne city centre and Newcastle international Airport. Swans Offshore Energy Park, is located within driving distance to key business hubs in the borough, such as Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate, Cobalt Park and Quorum Business Park. 8 08 SWANS CENTRE FOR INNOVATION Swans Centre for Innovation is a modern office building on Swans Offshore Energy Park which is home to a range of offshore energy, subsea and marine businesses, from start-ups to established companies. any of the occupiers have already expanded into larger offices in the centre. The suites can be let individually or in multiples. Plans are now in place to extend the Swans Centre for Innovation by refurbishing the upper three floors, creating additional space for innovative businesses to join the expanding offshore cluster which has already been established in the building. As well as providing offices and meeting facilities, the Centre also has the potential to include laboratory and R&D space for companies specialising in this sector. 10 10 RESEARCH AND TRAINING Locating to North Tyneside means a business has internationally renowned research and development capabilities and facilities on its doorstep. World-Class Universities The region s four universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria and Sunderland are at the forefront of research and development across a range of sectors including engineering, energy, applied science, design and medicine and all enjoy close links with local business and industry. The Energy Academy Based on the north bank of the Tyne, the Academy provides a centre of innovation, training and development for the energy sector. The Academy delivers qualifications from Level 2 through to degree level in energy technologies, manufacturing and maintenance as well as Apprenticeships. Facilities include welding bays, fabrication equipment, A, IG and TIG welding, plasma cutting and engineering workshops. The College also has equipment for the testing of 1KW turbines and solar panels as well as Computer Aided Design (CAD) facilities. Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult UK s flagship technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy. Located in Blyth, Northumberland it delivers prioritised research underpinned by world-class test and demonstration facilities to accelerate the development and deployment of offshore renewable energy technologies in the UK. Tyne Subsea A hub for hyperbaric research, test and certification, which supports both research and commercial developments to aid in the growth of subsea developments and underwater technology for businesses across the country. Tyne Subsea occupies two sites in the North East, located in Killingworth and Wallsend. Hyperbaric services are provided by BEL Valves with over 20 years experience of testing their own subsea equipment; and Newcastle University who are recognised as one of the UK s leading research Universities.
