2 4-week Sciences Programme at Ciel Bretagne - Brest "" The Ciel Bretagne, in association with Campus France, the Technopole Brest Iroise and the Campus mondial de la Mer, is offering English-speaking students with beginner level, the opportunity to attend a 4-week programme combining visits to companies and stateof-the-art laboratories, conferences on the current and future stakes for careers in this field, conducted in English, and. The programme also includes a wide selection of excursions and cultural visits organised on the theme of "Sciences and technology of the sea". The Ciel Bretagne, an establishment of the CCIMBO - chambre of commerce and industry métropolitaine Bretagne Ouest, has thirty years experience in teaching as a foreign language and every year welcomes between 700 and 1000 students from all over the world. Integration in an international group will enable each participant to increase their knowledge of the language and the excursions on offer will allow them to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the beautiful region of Brittany. Research in the fields of science, information and digital technology is particularly active in the region of Brest which is why this theme was an obvious choice. In fact the number of people, institutions and companies involved in marine science and technology puts Brest at the top of the European ranking and among the main international poles of research. Brest has invested massively in the development of marine resources eg. an investment of more than 200 million euros to attract and support companies specialized in marine renewable energies. The town s university campus is also dedicated to the sea with the Institut universitaire européen de la Mer, a specialization in maritime law in the law faculty and its engineering schools : Ensta, Enib, etc. We can also mention some of the key actors in this sector such as Ifremer, the Ecole Navale, Shom, and Cedre It is in this context that this programme has been developed to allow students to improve their, discover one of the most beautiful regions of France and further their learning in one of the most promising fields for the future of our planet. 2

Language level required: : open to beginners and other levels English: B2 Objectives To aquire or develop skills in, Discover "Sciences and technology of the sea" through company visits, conferences and meeting the specialists in this field in Brittany. Explore one of the most beautiful regions of France. Programme The course and the module «Science et technology of the sea» include 30 hours per week: 1) 15 hours of as a foreign language per week which will enable students to aquire or consolidate both their oral and written communication skills 2) A programme of visits to companies and institutes specialized in the field of marine resources. 3) A programme of cultural visits to discover the assets of the Brittany region. 4 Sciences Programme Week 1 Visit to Brest. From prehistoric times up to today Brest is a town marked by its maritime past and the present is still closely linked to the sea. You will discover the multiple facets of the town: its different ports, the Rade, a sheltered bay of 180 km², which provides ideal conditions for water sports all year; its castle and the famous rue de Siam. Welcome cocktail in Brest townhall. Visit to the Technopôle Brest Iroise. Presentation of the region s vibrant maritime culture will give you an overall view of the activities being developed in and around Brest, in fact 60% of research linked to the sea is based in Brest. This is the highest concentration of research and development in Europe in many fields such as marine safety and security, development of marine renewable energies and exploitation and promotion of marine biological resources Wednesday Marine energies. The rarefaction and the increase in cost of resources has led to the promotion of sustainable development and the diversification of our means of energy production. This was the challenge launched by the company Sabella in 2008 when they submerged «Sabella D03», the first marine turbine. This 3-metre-diametre experimental marine turbine prototype was successfully tested for a year in Brittany off the island of Ouessant. The company Naval Group are also involved in marine turbine projects and are planning the installation of seven turbines in the Raz Blanchard, in Normandy, in The visit to a laboratory of the university of Bretagne occidentale will allow you to see the projects developed by the science faculty students and to speak to them. Excursion to Quimper, capital of the Cornouaille region and a town of historical and artistic interest : visit the cathedrale, the depar temental museum of Breton culture and walk through the narrow streets with their half timbered houses. Then Concarneau : visit of a fish cannery, and the ramparts and the tower of the old town 4

5 Sciences Programme Week 2 Shellfish aquaculture: visit to the hatchery of Tinduff. The hatchery was created in 1983 when the fishermen realised that the sea s natural resources were not infinite. The hatchery ensures not only the reseeding of the Rade of Brest but also works closely with other fisheries committees. From Granville to La Rochelle, the fisheries committees buy spat to reseed their beds. The hatchery is currently working on another species: the scallop Chlamys varia, in response to the need to diversify the fishery. Visit an engineering school : meet with the students and find out about their studies. Wednesday The Cedre is a non-profit making organisation which was set up after the oil spill caused by the oil tanker "Amoco Cadiz" to improve oil spill response techniques and means in France. It is responsible for the documen-tation, research and experimentation on pollutants, their effects and the specialized means to deal with them. Visit to Océanopolis: an aquarium with European dimensions and a leisure centre dedicated to the oceans. With three pavillion: tropical, polar and temperate (around Brittany), there is a vast amount to see! The otter trail is exceptional. Free afternoon. Take a trip along the very beautiful coast around the Abers also called the coast of legends. Here the tides continue to carve the wild coast line forming rias, with majestic lighthouses marking the entrance to these havens of peace which are accessible to walkers and sailors. 5

6 Sciences Programme Week 3 The TechNature laboratories, created in 1986 by Christine Bodeau, a biochemist passionate about algae, are today the leader in the conception marine health care products for spas and thalassotherapy centres. Workshop/role play on the interaction between nature and the companies on a coastal zone. Wednesday The Roscoff marine laboratory is a research and teaching institute for marine biology and oceanography. The main areas of research are the cell cycle of the sea urchin, the biochemistry and development of brown and red algae, the ecophysiology of hydrothermal fauna and adaptation to extreme environments, the diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton, the evolution and genetics of the populations and benthic ecology. In marine chemistry, research is being conducted on chemical tracers to understand the phenomena of ocean circulation of water masses. Meeting with a chef : the art of using algae in Breton gastronomy. Free afternoon. Called "the beauty of the Occident", Le Mont Saint Michel points out at the heart of a wide bay overrun by the biggest tides in Europe. 6

7 Sciences Programme Week 4 Visit the commercial port : Presentation of the port and its activities : the container terminal, the offshore wind energy industry and travel cruise-ships. Excursion to Le Conquet : the most westernmost tip of France! Visit the Cross Corsen which controls maritime traffic and coordinates sea-rescue. Wednesday Visit the firm CLS : presentation of its 6 strategic activities : management of sustainable fisheries, maritime security, fleet management, alternative energy and mining, ground and space systems. The firm provides satellite services based on localization and collection of environmental data, observation of oceans and continental waters, and land and maritime surveillance. Brittany is the leader of the fishing industry in France. You will visit a fish farm and discover Brittany s rich marine resources. Review of the 4-week stay and free afternoon. Departure 7
