18 MARINET2 CASE STUDY ECONOMIC IMPACT Lir National Ocean Test Facility Lir NOTF has been operating since June 2016, and expects to be at full capacity by June The facility consists of test tanks for scaled wave and current testing, as well as electrical power take off and micro grid simulation capabilities Lir has benefited from national infrastructure grants awarded by SFI, SEAI and MI that has allowed the upgrading of facilities, such that they are on a par or better than other similar infrastructures worldwide Facilities are applicable to a wide range of sectors and users, including offshore renewable energy, maritime/naval architecture, coastal engineering and modelling, civil engineering etc.

19 INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT IMPACT MARINET2 CASE STUDY MaRINET2 is a 10.5m project, funded by Horizon 2020 programme and coordinated by MaREI Provides support to technology developers of offshore wind, wave and tidal to test their devices in research facilities and in real sea conditions This support will accelerate the next generation of offshore renewable energy technologies towards the marketplace by providing technology testing at MaRINET2 s network of world leading testing facilities

20 INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT IMPACT FEC CASE STUDY Headquartered in MaREI, Future Earth Coasts provides a platform for networking and explores the drivers and socialenvironmental impacts of global environmental change in coastal zones Hosting the International Project Office of Future Earth Coasts provides an opportunity to showcase the expertise and capacity within MaREI internationally through: Promoting sustainable technologies and providing a global example of best practice in integrated maritime development Creating the opportunity for young and mid career scientists to work with world class researchers globally in a cross and multi transdisciplinary way

22 Phase 1 System Design Phase 3 Sectoral Phase 2 Local Authorities Climate Ireland Operational 2017/2018 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT CLIMATE IRELAND PLATFORM Developed by MaREI researchers, Climate Ireland provides an online resource providing public, professional and practitioner audiences information on impacts of climate change at local/regional and national levels Climate Ireland has received funding from the DCCAE/EPA until the end of 2019 Ireland s first National Adaptation Framework was developed during 2017, and explicitly mentions MaREI and the fundamental role that the Climate Ireland Portal will have in supporting the delivery of plans

23 NAVIGATE PROJECT PUBLIC POLICY IMPACT Funded under the Ocean Law and Marine Governance Research Fellowship grant to a partnership project between the MaREI Centre and UCC School of Law. Funding amounts to 800,000 over four years Aims to support and enable efficient and effective governance of the Irish maritime area, exploring legal, economic and environmental consequences of Brexit Position papers will be produced which synthesise legal and governance perspectives to provide evidence based support to national policy makers, and will identify how national and sectoral strategies for marine resources can be climateproofed NAVIGATE will ascertain the legal and procedural barriers to the development of a thriving Blue Economy, including obstacles to development of key sectors, and is intended to strengthen national capacity in the area of marine law and ocean governance
