SECESA 2016 Universidad Politécnica de Madrid ESA s Asteroid Impact Mission the role of ESA s Concurrent Design Facility Michel van Pelt, Vasco Pesquita, Andrés Gálvez, Ian Carnelli, Karim Mellab, Borja Garcia Gutierrez ESA-ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands AIM Slide 1

Background AIM = Asteroid Impact Mission low-cost mission of opportunity to fly to binary asteroid Didymos, reaching it October 2022 demonstrate advanced GNC, semi-autonomous operations for close proximity operations, use of CubeSats in deep-space and new platform technologies. Addressing planetary defense in close cooperation with NASA s DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission. AIM and DART part of the joint Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) project, a collaboration involving ESA, DLR, Observatoire de la Côte d Azur, JHU/APL and NASA. AIM Slide 2

Mission Profile AIM Slide 3

Background AIM started as a project within ESA s General Studies Programme, based on previous NEO mission studies and especially Don Quijote. Don Quijote studied in the CDF, then Industrial Phase A studies. Concept with separately launched Impactor and Orbiter considered too expensive. DART mission of JHU/APL offered opportunity for collaborative mission, splitting Impactor (DART) and Orbiter (AIM). AIM Slide 4

CDF AIM Studies & Reviews Overview AIM has made intensive use of ESA s Concurrent Design Facility to support its decisions, beyond normal pre-phase A study use AIM Slide 5

CDF Studies TAF and AIM studies proved the benefit of conducting very early exploratory mission concept studies in a CDF environment. fast, high-level trade-offs ensuring all critical issues taken into account through a team of experts. AIM-3 classical CDF study, following TAF and AIM studies. Direct involvement of all necessary experts and stake holders, including external scientists, payload experts and DART representatives. AIM-3P and AIM-3PL studies proved that delta-designs and options studies can be quickly organised and executed. shortly after the AIM-3 study involving virtually the same concurrent design team AIM-3PL showed the use of concurrent option trade ( what if ) studies performed in parallel with industrial studies, helping to guide the ongoing industrial studies and overall project definition. AIM Slide 6

CDF Reviews Organisation of subsequent industrial studies can be set up quickly by the people involved in the CDF studies they have the best understanding of the various requirements, constraints and other issues Beneficial to run industrial study reviews through concurrent sessions rather than standard ESA format (= presentation + RIDs) AIM Slide 7 ESA review team involving the same experts of the original CDF study team Ensures a quick understanding of the design issues faced by industry More effective discussions and minimisation of minor RIDs Collaborative and more efficient finding of common agreed ways forward Use of a specialised RID system for such concurrent reviews is highly recommended.

Conclusions Concurrent Design Facilities can be used for more than only typical pre-phase A studies. The CDF is a great tool for supporting a new project by 1. exploring mission options 2. trading solutions at all levels 3. developing pre-phase A design 4. explore alternatives in parallel with Industry studies 5. Running Industry study reviews concurrently Works best with a stable team throughout the different studies and reviews. AIM Slide 8
