CDF: che cos e? The ESTEC Concurrent Design Facility is an Integrated Design Environment (IDE) available to all ESA programmes for interdisciplinary and interdirectorate applications, based on Concurrent Engineering methodology Initially conceived for the assessment and the conceptual design of future space missions, i.e. internal pre-phase A / feasibility studies Currently also used for other multidisciplinary applications, such as: Technology infusion System of Systems architectures Programme road-mapping Instrument (conceptual) design Reviews Anomaly investigations ( tiger teams ) Preparation of System specs, ITTs, standards tailoring, etc. ASI_CEF Inaug 25Nov 13 Slide 7
CDF: metodo Team orientated concurrent engineering Integration of tools, project data, mission and system models Simultaneous participation of all mission domains, incl. all Sub-systems, Programmatics/AIV, Operations, Cost Engineering, Risk Analysis, CAD, Simulation Conducted in sessions: 4 to 12 plenary meetings, 4 hours, bi-weekly Team Leader coordination Customer participation Model driven On-line design Highly co-operative & interactive Iterative Design options comparison and trade-offs ASI_CEF Inaug 25Nov 13 Slide 8
CDF: achievements Activities performed 180+ (potential) future missions studied and designed internally at pre-phase A, conceptual, system level 3 System of System studies (JANUS, Space based Security architectures, EDA support) 7 new launcher concept design 11 complex payload instrument design (IDA), incl. platform, system, mission 28 reviews of Industrial Phase A studies (internal + Industry) and Phase B Joint studies with other Agencies, Industry, Academia Education, training, promotion and standardisation activities Spin-off Transfer of CDF know-how and software to national Agencies, Industry, Academia Creation of a Community of practitioners (e.g. bi-annual SECESA workshop) Standardisation of the design data model for preliminary phases (ECSS-TM-E-10-25) Distribution of Open Source SW (OCDT) as core/integration tool for all the facilities ASI_CEF Inaug 25Nov 13 Slide 9

Payload & P/L accommodation Advanced launchers Diverse range of space missions Crewed vehicles for exploration preparation programme ROSITA instrument on Columbus External Platform Socrates Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle S5P Human Missions to Mars ExoMars Telescopes and Technology FIRI ISS Internal Payload Science Requirements Definition Moon Lander IMPACT facility inside an ISS rack WiFLY Laplace ASI_CEF Inaug 25Nov 13 Slide 11
Benefici Performances (typical pre-phase A study): Study duration (Design phase): 3-6 weeks (cp. 6-9 months!) Factor 4 reduction in time Factor 2 reduction in cost (for the Customer) Increased nr of studies per year, compatibly with max 2 parallel studies Improvement in quality, providing quick, consistent and complete mission design, incl. technical feasibility, programmatics, risk, cost Technical report becomes part of the specs for subsequent industrial activity, Cost report remains the ESA independent reference Capitalisation of corporate knowledge for further reusability CDF has become an essential tool to support ESA Decision Making and Risk Management processes ASI_CEF Inaug 25Nov 13 Slide 12
