1 NAUT7006: Ship Stability & Construction Title: Long Title: Module Code: Ship Stability & Construction APPROVED Ship Stability & Construction NAUT7006 Credits: 5 NFQ Level: Field of Study: Intermediate Nautical Science Valid From: Semester /14 ( September 2013 ) Module Delivered in Module Coordinator: 3 programme(s) Conor Mowlds Module Author: Module Description: This module provides the learner with the underpinning knowledge required to ensure that he/she can successfully complete and understand the calculations necessary to prove that a ship meets the International and National standards of intact ship stability. This is a requirement by the DOT for professional license. This module also provides the learner with general knowledge of the principles of ship construction, plans, and the principal components of ship design. Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: LO1 LO2 LO3 LO4 LO5 LO6 Complete the calculations necessary to show compliance with IMO Intact Stability for typical loaded conditions on board cargo ships. Outline the design and construction requirements for specialised ship types. Illustrate structural arrangements for merchant vessels. State the requirements for watertight integrity and subdivision. Outline the design and operation of ancillary systems on merchant vessels. Break down the processes of ship building and maintenance. Pre-requisite learning Module Recommendations This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named CIT module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s) NAUT6020 General Ship Knowledge Incompatible Modules These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list. No incompatible modules listed Co-requisite Modules No Co-requisite modules listed Requirements This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section. NAUT6020 General Ship Knowledge Co-requisites Page 1 of 7
