2 Overall description The interest for Arctic is continually growing politically as well as commercially. Different industries are seeking new opportunities further and further north, both offshore and land-based. New fields and sites will be developed in the remote, hostile and vulnerable Arctic environment and new technical solutions are to be developed. The industry and the society in general are facing new and unknown challenges. The purpose of this study program is to provide candidates with a unique Arctic engineering knowledge and competence for managing these industrial challenges. The programme is inter-disciplinary with a broad approach to relevant aspects of science and technology. Skills The candidate is able to analyze academic problems based on the history, traditions and uniqueness of technology is able to analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations within technology is able to critically read and analyze miscellaneous sources of information, and use the information for structuring and formulating academic argumentation is able to work independently with problem solving General competence The candidate displays a good working habit, follows the code of ethics, and is able to continue a carrier within research, production, development and technical professions displays good communication skills, orally and in writing, for presentation of her/his work for both general public and specialists in the field displays the ability to use his/her knowledge and skills in new areas, for solving advanced working tasks and for contribution to innovation Admission requirements Admission to the Master in Technology and Safety in the High North requires a Bachelor s degree in engineering, or similar education of not less than three years duration approved in accordance with the 2
3 Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. Relevant field of study may be automation, process and gas technology, nautical, mechanical, processing, safety, nautical or civil engineering. Other fields of study may be considered upon individual assessment. Admission to the programme normally requires a BSc. average grade of C or higher. The lectures are based on prerequisites similar to the course MAT-2050 Matematikk 3 for ingeniører. All educational activities will be in English. In order to read academic literature and profit from lectures, it is a prerequisite that the students have thorough competence in the use of English, orally as well as in writing. Target group This is an interdisciplinary Master of Science programme founded on engineering science. The programme aims at candidates with interest in technological and safety related aspects of the industrial development in the Arctic. The program is well suited for engineering students from automation, process and gas technology, nautics and safety and environment, but also other technological study programs on bachelor lever as e.g. mechanical engineers and maritime university college candidates are the target groups of this programme. Students from both university colleges and universities will be recruited. The programme is taught in English, which makes this programme well suited for international students with engineering background. Teaching methods This is a theoretical programme and the teaching will mainly be based on lectures. Lectures are organized either as blocks or regularly, on a weekly basis. In some courses, seminars may be arranged. It is expected a high degree of independent work in the courses. The lectures will be research-based. Calculations and the use of computer-based tools form a substantial part of the education. The teaching methods will include lectures, projects, student presentations, teamwork and mandatory assignments. Some courses may include compulsory lectures, exercises, excursion and approval of exercises/fieldwork or semester reports. This will be stated in the course descriptions. Outside lectures hours, all communication between lecturers and students are given in Fronter. Master s thesis In the fourth semester, the students will carry out a mandatory, individual master s thesis, equivalent to 30 ECTS. The students should choose an in-depth study within their field of study from their Bachelor degree, or base the thesis on one or more of the topics included in the programme, e.g. maritime operations and preparedness, reliability engineering or operation and maintenance. The thesis can be written at the department, at another university, or in cooperation with another institution. The Dept. will provide a supervisor for the students. It is the responsibility of the students to propose the academic problem and to initiate the project. The students are encouraged to establish contacts with clients and to get projects from the industry. Working on the Master thesis, the student should demonstrate knowledge about the research methodology presented in the programme, as well as skills in scientific reflection and analysis. Programme description The Master s programme offer specialization in three disciplines: 3

Automation Program outline: Engineering, course, engineering, course, course, The common compulsory course in this master programme is - engineering, - engineering, - - TEK-3901 Master thesis in technology, The two first of these courses gives the candidate an overall understanding of Arctic engineering knowledge. Knowledge of how to operations in harsh climate with Polar Low pressure systems, icing conditions and in dark winter season are given with connection to and on- and offshore installations. MAT-1003 Kalkulus 3(or similar) is recommended taken during the bachelor program prior to starting at the master program. The project paper and the master thesis, provide the final in-depth research and development task in the chosen specializations for each candidate. The different specializations are described in the following with compulsory courses, recommended optional courses and an example of a study plan. 4
5 Risk and Reliability The discipline within "Risk and Reliability" enlightens the theoretical fundament of risk and reliability analyses, and techniques available to assess risk and reliability. The study focus on the technical and safety related challenges associated with industrial activities in the High North. The students will be introduced to methods and tools for managing advanced, complex and integrated technical systems with respect to operation and maintenance, reliability and production assurance, health, safety, environmental and economical risk as well as emergency preparedness. 6 Nautical science The discipline within nautical science enlightens operations -and floating structures on a general base, particularly in the Arctic, focusing on advanced and safe operations in the ocean space. This includes; ship stability, dynamic positioning, collision and grounding avoidance, weather routing and hydrodynamic aspects in marine operations in the ocean space. Navigational instruments such as; Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), inertial navigation, sub-sea navigation and the integration of such systems. 7 Automation The automation discipline focuses on sensor technology, signal processing and embedded systems for the ability to collect and analyze measurement data. The discipline focuses further on transforming information of different fysical paramaters into a signal (sensor technology) and to process the signal of the parameters (signal processing) for saving and analyzing (embedded systems for collecting and analysing measurement data). The dicipline also encloses more advanced control methodes for the use of measurement data.
