The main objective within the funding period of 2013 is: 1) to collect available data, 2) to conduct field trips, 3) to test models to be used, 4) to design the prototype of PIS and 5) to set up a detailed planning for the next steps. With regards to the approved objectives, the activities and milestones during this period were: 1) Collect all available static data from study sites (WP1); 2) Collect and pre-process observed meteorological and hydrological data and perform the assessment of climate change (CC) (WP3) and CC related water disaster (WD) (WP4); 3) To conduct field surveys in NHQ to collect data on indigenous knowledge (WP2), impacts of and vulnerability to CC (WP5), and river information, hydraulic structures, flood marks, topography and other relevant features to analyse and improve the quality of hydraulic models (WP4): + Jan-Feb 2013: Static data collection (WP1) by Vietnamese team + May 2013: Detail survey for hydrological conditions as inputs for hydrological - hydraulic modelling (WP4) and questionnaire testing (WP5) by Vietnamese team + August 2013: Impact and vulnerability survey (WP5) by Vietnamese team + September 2013: Data collection (WP1) and working with local authorities (Project Management Board) + November 2013: Joint survey between Vietnamese and Danish teams on Indigenous knowledge (WP2), impact and vulnerability (WP5) + Match 2014: Joint supplemental survey between Vietnamese and Danish researchers on indigenous knowledge, impact and vulnerability (WP2, WP5) 4) Collect initial and boundary condition data, pre-process, setup General Conditions, February 2014, Appendix 1: Annual Progress Report Form, page 2

3 Describe the progress made in reaching the outputs/results (progress on each of the listed outputs/results) Describe the progress in terms of research capacity building experiments and run the Regional Climate Models (RCMs) for simulating and projecting CC (WP3); 5) Development of hydrological models for small catchments in NHQ; Development of 1- D hydraulic models for river networks in NHQ for Ca river system in Nghe An and Ha Tinh; Development of advection/diffusion model for salinity intrusion in Ca river system in Nghe An and Ha Tinh (WP4) 6) Design the web-based PIS (WP6); and 7) Screen MSc/PhD students (WP7). 1) About 80% of available static data from study sited have been uploaded to the project ftp server for sharing to all project members (ftp://danida.vnu.edu.vn/ - Username and password are requested) 2) All available meteorological data and the assessment results of the observed climate change over NHQ, which have been uploaded to the project website ( 3) All available hydrological data and the assessment results of the CC related WD in NHQ, which have been stored in the project office desktop computer for further processing 4) All field survey data, including questionnaires, photographs, videos and voice records, which have been stored in the project office desktop computer for further processing 5) Initial and boundary condition data, including reanalysis, CMIP5 and observed gridded data for running and validating Regional Climate Models (RCMs), which have been stored in the storage system of HUS (very huge datasets) 6) Outputs from RCMs on future climate projections based on RCP scenarios, which have been stored in the storage system of HUS (very huge datasets) 7) First version of web-based PIS for vulnerability reduction to CC induced WD on aquaculture and agriculture in NHQ; 8) Two (2) International Peer Review Articles (ISI) and four (4) International Conference Proceedings 9) Three (3) Vietnamese Master Students are working on the their thesis. During the three visits in 2013 of the Danish researchers to Vietnam: 1) Two international workshops were held in Hanoi at which both Vietnamese and Danish researchers gave presentations and discussions related to the scientific activities; 2) Three joint field surveys by Danish researchers and Vietnamese members, including Master and PhD students, in which young Vietnamese scientists and Master/PhD students have opportunities to learn and accumulate their knowledge on the research approaches of the social science and on the experiences of field surveys from the Danish researchers. 4 Describe the status of the project management and coordination of the project Describe the status of the partnership with the Danish research partners in terms of participation and engagement Describe the progress made of the communication activities during the year 9 Substantive Changes Through the scientific workshops/seminars researchers from both sides have been enhanced the knowledge in interdisciplinary approaches. Project is managed and monitored by the Project Management Board under the HUS and VNU. Project went smoothly during the last period (2013). All the project activities have been followed by time schedule to reach planned milestones corresponding to the budget. Danish partner, leaded by Dr. Ole Bruun, closely cooperates with Vietnamese researchers in term of frequently exchange information through the visits to Vietnam for field works, workshops/seminars, discussions via s. The mechanism of sharing data and at least two co-authors international publications has been setup between the Danish (Dr. Mogens Buch-Hansen and Dr. Thorkil Casse) and Vietnamese researchers. Project webpage ( and ftp-server (ftp://danida.vnu.edu.vn) have been setup to post relevant information, documents, and highlight results of the project. Project researchers can login to upload and download data, materials, and to exchange information to each through the ftp-server. Web-based PIS also has been conducted and posted at for getting comments and feedbacks. Information on the project has been disseminated through 2 international peer review articles (Journal of Climate Research, and Theoretical and Applied Climatology), and 4 international conference proceedings (The 3rd International MAHASRI/HyARC workshop on Asian Monsoon and Water Cycle, August 28-30, 2013, DaNang, Vietnam, and The 14th Asian Congress of Fluid Mechanics - 14ACFM October 15-19, 2013; Hanoi and Halong, Vietnam).
