1 Danny Harrison UCL Interaction Centre, 8 th Floor MPEB, University College London, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, UK d.o.b.: 03/09/86 Summary I am third year PhD student in the University College London Interaction Centre (UCLIC), researching behaviour change with personal informatics. I am seeking to widen my experience by working in a more commercial research and design environment before completing my PhD. I have a broad knowledge of computing in general, and a strong interest in creating and evaluating novel interactions with technology. I enjoy keeping up to date with trends in computing, especially every day interactions with technology. I am passionate about improving public health and wellness, and would love to pursue a research career that allows me to design, prototype and evaluate systems that have a positive impact on people s lives. Education UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC) Ph.D. - Human Computer Interaction October Present My research is related to behaviour change with personal informatics and wearables and focuses on how activity tracking systems (such as the Fitbit or Jawbone) may help in encouraging or supporting behaviour change. My approach is to run in-the-wild studies that mostly focus on qualitative data from interviews and diary studies supplemented with quantitative measures of activity logs. Insights from my research will help inform the design of future activity tracking systems and aid users in making positive changes to their lifestyle. I am supervised by Dr Paul Marshall (UCLIC), Dr Nadia Berthouze (UCLIC), and Dr Jon Bird (City University). Georgia Institute of Technology September December 2014 Visiting Researcher As part of the Marie-Curie IRSES funded UbiHealth project ( I spent three months with Georgia Tech s Ubicomp research group, hosted by Dr Gregory Abowd. During my stay I furthered my PhD research by running an interview study with Atlanta-based activity tracker users. The goal was to create an understanding of how aspects such as the built environment, social norms and transport opportunities affect use of, and engagement with, activity trackers. UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC) September October 2012 MSc - Human Computer Interaction & Ergonomics My master s course focused on HCI, with classes on ergonomics, design principles, evaluation, and psychology. There was a strong focus on working with others and application of usercentred design methods on course-related projects. Examples of projects include: creation of a prototype BBC Radio 4 mobile application; a usability evaluation of the NHS behavior change webiste Down your Drink ( and creation and evaluation of a novel device for communicating touch over a distance, the feelybean, which was selected as a finalist in the CHI 2012 Student Design Competition. My final project, titled Floorplay: design and evaluation of a system to motivate physical activity in office workers, involved the creation and evaluation of an installation with a situated public floor display, designed to promote stair use in an office building. Merit
2 Portsmouth University September June 2010 BSc - E-Commerce and Internet Systems First Class Honours I completed my top up degree over a distance learning platform, part-time while I continued working. The course had units related to computing and e-business topics, including: HCI, project management, and web technologies. My interest in HCI grew throughout the course, resulting in a desire to use my computing knowledge to improve users experience and help people. My final project was the creation and evaluation of an online environment to facilitate a peergroup in sharing knowledge over a distance in a commercial setting. I followed an appropriate design process, involving users throughout, and created an interactive PHP-based web system which could have been commercially adopted. Newbury College Higher National Diploma (HND) - Computing 18 Distinction Units The course included hardware, software, administration and networking subjects. I learnt languages including C, C++, VB and PHP, along with skills such as systems analysis, project management and network administration. National Diploma (ND) - Computing Distinction The course specialised in computer hardware and networking, and included programming. Work University College London Teaching Assistant October Present Throughout my PhD I have taken on a large amount of teaching duties, including: preparing lectures and teaching material, offering support and advice to students, marking coursework and exam papers, and providing group supervision. I have worked on six different modules with undergraduate and Masters students, including: Physical Computing, Interaction Design, Design with Apps, Software Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction, Systems Engineering, and Design Practice. This has included, on average, 50 hours of teaching per semester. In recognition of my teaching efforts, in 2014 I was nominated for an "Outstanding teaching award" from the UCL Student Union. Project Supervisor I have previously supervised two HCI-E MSc projects, and I am currently co-supervising a further four. The two completed projects (2013, 2015) were related to behaviour change. The first was an ethnographic study of the competitive sports service Strava and the second project focused on an evaluation of the habit formation application "Lift" (now called Coach.me). Both students achieved distinction grades. Research System Developer (July-August 2013) I created an online platform for a study in the ongoing Ilhaire research project ( which allowed participants to view and score videos. Language used: PHP and HTML, CSS.
3 Amberlight UX December 2013, February 2015 UX Research Assistant I have worked in team as a research assistant on multiple projects, such as an out-of-box experience study of a newly released consumer electric device. Through this experience I was able to collaborate with industry researchers and transfer my academic skills into the commercial world. Halfords, Newbury January November 2011 Duty Manager My duties included serving customers, dealing with complaints, problem solving, completing and coordinating tasks, and general day-to-day management of staff. I worked in various roles, both part and full-time, over almost eight years with the company: Mechanic (3 years), Sales Assistant (3 years), and finally Duty Manager (2 years). Retail work gave me experience of dealing with a wide range of people, in a professional manner, whilst under pressure. Skills Qualitative: Technical: Programming: Interpersonal: Considerable experience with running and analysing interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic studies. Experience with using F5 and ATLAS.ti for transcriptions and analysis. Strong knowledge of physical prototyping and toolkits. Experienced at applying user-centred design methods. Experienced at using Adobe Creative Suite and Lightroom. Working knowledge of operating system and network management. Proficient in PHP, MySQL, C, C++, HTML, CSS. Excellent written and oral communicator. Strong leadership skills. Capable to work in teams. Attention to detail. Honours and Awards EPSRC Science Photography Competition February 2015 A photograph taken during my trip to Georgia Tech was awarded third place in the people category of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) 2014 National Science Photography Competition. Ubihealth Funded Secondment September December 2014 The European Ubihealth research project ( funded my 3-month stay in Georgia Tech, where I was able to run an interview study with existing users of activity trackers. ACM Travel Grant September 2014 I was awarded a travel Grant from the ACM to attend ISWC/ Ubicomp 2014 in Seattle, WA. UCLU - Outstanding Teaching Support May 2014 In May 2014 I was nominated for the UCL Union (UCLU) Student Choice Teaching Awards, as a result of my work as a Teaching Assistant in the 2013 academic year.

6 Personal I love to keep up to date with new developments in the HCI and enjoy using end evaluating new technology as often as I can. I have a strong interest in ubiquitous and physical computing and enjoy creating prototypes with toolkits such as the Arduino. I am currently preparing to undertake my first small-scale production of a simple wearable device. I m a keen photographer ( and I m comfortable using various tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite and Photoshop Lightroom, both for editing photographs and other creative tasks. I am also happy to turn my hand to operating system management and network administration if the situation requires these skills have proven to be valuable when working with creation and installation of unusual systems, such as my adaptation of a foot pedal for transcriptions ( Although I wouldn t consider programming and development to be my strongest skills, I do have experience using a range of different languages including C, PHP, MySQL, XHTML, CSS and I am not afraid to put my programming knowledge into practice. The passion for my research also comes from my love to work physical activity into my everyday routine. I am also a keen cyclist and I enjoy walking, especially for transport as I believe active transport allows me to experience places in a way I otherwise wouldn t.
