New Horizons For HCI Yvonne Rogers Open University

Creative HCI HCI is reinventing itself themes scope rhetoric Moving away from usability enhancing the everyday to be pleasurable embracing the emotional, eco-friendly and embodied inventing innovative experiences

Pinocchio interface A device for novice users to perform complex interactive tasks without any nose training Henry, T. et al (1991) UIST Proceedings

Urinal interface Sensor-based system designed to enhance micturation Goal is to aim at hamsters When hit they dance Maynes-Aminzade, D. & Solos Raffle, H. (2003) CHI Proceedings

Body interaction HipDisk (Wilde, 2007) Reactable (Jorda, 2006)

A far cry from early HCI User no longer focus interactions No longer modelling designing novel experiences explaining how our lives have changed

Changing lives Hyper-connected mobile phone is natural cyborg extension Second Life is second home Techno-dependent Sat navs behaviour tracking Trixie tracker

Changing computers PCs to UbiComp pervasive mobile devices proliferating sensors Ambient environments wi-fi in the wild surfaces Ecologies of technologies

Changing community From ergonomists, psychologists and computer scientists...to sociologists, designers, artists and anthropologists Now musicians, literary critics and philosophers No longer any computer novices elders, children and even babies can surf and touch

Changing views Old visions HP and Apple s visions of the effortless future Weiser s vision of calm computing

Changing views New reflections Grudin s overviews Is HCI homeless? Bødker s third wave Harrison et al s third paradigm more complete overall understanding of the nature of interaction

Challenges confronting HCI Are we having an identity crisis? Technology-fluent population means usability no longer important Design guidance approach outmoded practitioners developing own methods Hot topics have changed frustrating VCRs superseded by Big Brother fears

beginn

A congeries of concerns Concern Past Future Frame of reference users context Method, theory and perspec6ve scien0fic approach interac0on design mul0ple mixing and mashing Working together interdisciplinarity transdisciplinarity Outputs ethnographies models and tools for analysis design guidance insights crea0ng new ways of experiencing thinking tools

Extending user-centred design

Thinking tools Familiar mind maps, flow charts, SWOT, fishbone diagrams (cause and effect) Less familiar philosophical debate, conceptual analysis

Human values HCI 2020 report sponsored by Microsoft centrality of human values examples include feeling safe, being healthy, being independent Explore value-based interactions

An example A real-world problem* increase in children with diabetes disease requires constant management more worried parents New interactions mobile technology can help product available that can communicate child s glucose level to others, e.g., GlucoMon *Tammy Toscos PhD disserta0on

Child interactions Will child become more dependent on parents to do the monitoring? Should child have control over what and when the readings are relayed? Should the device signal to the child whenever a parent has called? What happens if the parents do not call for sometime? Will the child become obsessed with the device?

Wider network of interactions Parents do they get more or less anxious having access to this information? will they check too much and worry more? School teachers and nurses will they take less responsibility to manage the child s disease if they think parents will take care remotely? Friends and family how do they fit in?

A parent s dilemma I think that I would need a way to tell my daughter that I am not watching. I cannot stand the thought of letting her down by not responding immediately to a blood sugar issue. An alternative would be to get high level information, for example, that she checked her blood sugar before lunch and that she gave herself insulin after lunch I think this would help prevent me from interfering with her independence or her relationship with the school nurse. I want her to learn to count on herself and others.

Relevant values Reassurance of child s safety and health Desire to control one s surroundings Child s independence Security and privacy of data sent Responsibility for system

Value-based interactions Project is illustrative of new set of moral and social dilemmas more monitoring, tracking and diagnostic technologies appearing as off the shelf products Beyond legibility, usability and comfort relevant values and acceptability ecology of interactions privacy policies appropriate forms of information, control and access Use thinking tools to make explicit interplay of values and dilemmas

Finally What does it mean to be human? can technologies and external representations lead to new ways of experiencing and thinking? can minds, bodies and senses be extended? flickr.com/photos/tonx/433203/

Sensory substitution Information from artificial receptor is processed by different sensory organ Bach-y-Rita (1969) pioneer of approach seeing using tongue helped blind people navigate environments and read

Tongue interface Converted images from camera into tactile image on tongue Grid of electrodes the size of a postage stamp Produced a fizzy sensation: it's kind of like when you stick your tongue on a 9-volt battery

E-sense project* Extending our sense of self through experimenting with Ubicomp technologies Use philosophical analysis to inform technological design Conduct empirical studies to answer philosophical debate build useful sensory extension tools generate novel insights into the extended mind *Yvonne Rogers, Andy Clark, Paul Marshall, Simon Holland and Jon Bird

Conclusion HCI is experiencing a renaissance May not need its Galileos, Michaelangelos or Beatles But needs new ways of thinking about the art and science of interaction
