9 Since the 1950 s design has been expanding continuously and now extends from the design of objects and spaces that we use on a daily basis to cities, landscapes, nations, cultures, bodies, genes, political systems, the way we produce food, to the way we travel, build cars and clone sheep. 10 With accelerated design activity into the 21st century, it is clear that an increasing number of practitioners across a diverse range of disciplines regard their methods as rooted in design practice or are using methods that could be considered designerly. 11 It is equally clear that design is expanding its disciplinary, conceptual, theoretical, and methodological borders to encompass ever-wider disciplines, activities and forms of practice.

12 Design has always aimed to make the industrialized world both human and habitable, as well as to generate a better quality of life within artificial environments.

15 Design research is not concerned with what exists but with what ought to be. It breaks with the determinisms of the past; it continually challenges, provokes and disrupts the status quo.

16 Michael Burton s Nanotopia explores what might happen if conventional production methods shift to become one of organic self-replication and how people might use their bodies to harvest and sell their personal commodities such as hair, eyelashes, blood, skin, toenails, etc.

21 Designers no longer fit into neat categories, rather they are a mixture of artists, engineers, entrepreneurs and anthropologists hybrids.

22 Service design is the activity of planning and organizing people, infrastructure, communication and material components of a service in order to improve its quality and the interaction between the service provider and its customers.

23 Co-design is an approach to design attempting to actively involve all stakeholders (e.g. employees, partners, customers, citizens, end users) in the design process to help ensure the result better meets their needs and is usable.

29 The role of design is exposed to new social and industrial problems and is faced with the challenge of putting forward new profound qualities of creating a more advanced ecological balance between human beings and the artificial environment which they inhabit.
