2 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY Product Design Background knowledge and qualifications Design and Technology projects undertaken since Year 7 should have provided sufficient background knowledge for this course to be successfully undertaken. Course description This course combines the content of GCSE resistant materials and graphic products to produce an extremely interesting option that will allow girls to work in a wide range of materials to design and make products. Work will consist of related theory, relevant demonstrations and practical tasks connected to specific areas of study. Presentation and graphical techniques plus model making, CAD/CAM and ICT will be learnt and play an important part in this subject, being used where relevant within the controlled assessment. Girls will be expected to design and make products using a combination of materials. The making will take the form of a model, a prototype or a fully functional product. You will be actively encouraged to produce 'live' portfolio briefs, where a genuine need or situation has been identified, explored, and overcome within the boundaries of this course. Where possible you should include input from an outside source e.g. Manufacturer, Designer or any other relevant sector of industry / commerce. Product Design is a good option to choose for someone with sound design and make skills. Girls with graphical and presentation abilities who can communicate their ideas using a variety of media should do well within Product Design. The controlled assessment major project counts for 60% of the total GCSE mark, this is split between the design folder and the product/model that is made. The Controlled Assessment is internally assessed and externally moderated by the examination board. The final examination is allocated the remaining 40% of GCSE marks. Use of Course and Qualification Higher Education institutions view the subject very favourably as it indicates curricular diversity and an ability to use a wide range of skills. Girls who study Product Design can progress further to careers in engineering, design, architecture etc. providing an excellent balance of creative studies with some of the more theoretical subjects offered.

4 DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Textiles Technology Background knowledge and qualifications Sufficient knowledge in Textiles should have been gained since Year 7. Girls should be interested in the design process and willing to learn new practical skills that will be required to produce textile items to GCSE standard. Course description This course aims to produce forward thinking fashion and textiles designers who can work with fabric to produce a variety of products. The controlled assessment will consist of designing and making a final product which they will fully develop through their portfolio of design work and experimentation. Girls use their theoretical knowledge and sound skills base, allowing them to produce work that is of personal interest within the context of the specification. At the end of Year 10 and 11 girls will take part in an exciting fashion show where their work will be modeled and viewed by fellow girls and invited guests. Industrial and inspirational visits, including a trip to London in Year 11 will make girls aware of what an important role design plays within our modern society. The controlled assessment carries 60% of the final. This will include the girls design portfolio and three - dimensional outcomes. Coursework is internally assessed and externally moderated by the examination board. The final exam carries the remaining 40% of the. Use of Course and Qualification Many areas are open to those who have successfully completed a Textile GCSE. Girls who wish to progress further in their study of Textiles can go on to related degree level courses and jobs in advertising, designing, science, manufacture and the wider fashion industry. Higher Education institutions view the subject very favourably as it indicates curricular diversity and ability to use a wide range of skills.

6 DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Food Technology Background knowledge and qualifications This course builds on the work of the previous three years and draws on sound designing and making skills. The whole of Year 10 is used to develop both design and making skills, which will be used for the examination in Year 11. Course description This is an exciting and creative subject that allows girls to develop technological and problem solving skills, which are so much in demand in the 21st Century. Any girl who enjoys working with food or shows a keen interest in food related issues such as eating disorders, food scares or the health of the nation, then this is the course for you! The design of the course enables individuals to investigate the relationship between nutrition, food choice and health in today's consumer driven society. This popular subject develops knowledge and understanding of food preparation, manufacture and food safety. Girls enjoy a high degree of practical work in order to develop their food handling skills and understanding of food behaviour. They undertake a wide range of investigations that involve the use of food, technological resources and ICT. Controlled Assessment constitutes 60% of the final grade; therefore time is allocated to the research and development of a chosen product or range of products which includes both written and practical elements. Controlled Assessment is internally assessed and externally moderated by the examination board. An additional bonus includes the opportunity to study for the Basic Food Hygiene Certificate whilst working for the GCSE in Food Technology. Use of course and qualification Girls who study Food Technology can progress further to study subjects such as Manufacturing, Catering and Hotel Management. The qualification provides an added dimension to anyone planning on a career in Food Science, Sports Science, Health, Medicine or Food and Consumer industries. Higher Education institutions view the subject very favourably as it indicates curricular diversity and an ability to use a wide range of skills.
