Using and improving data relating to lost fishing gear Ingrid Giskes, Global Head of Campaign, World Animal Protection & Chair of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative. Gideon Jones, Coordinator of the Building Evidence Group, Global Ghost Gear Initiative.
The need for data Identifying the full extent of the problem to formulate effective solutions. Identifying hotspot areas to focus efforts in the right location. Power of a baseline - measuring progress of actions. Creating shared ownership and responsibility.
A new report: The ghosts beneath the waves Showcasing the changing landscape on ALDFG: The problem The solutions Formulating a baseline to measure progress of seafood companies on action on ghost gear in CSR policies.
The role of data SDG target 14.1 calls for a reduction of marine litter of all kinds including ALDFG by Governments and corporates are setting additional targets e.g. EU reduction of marine litter with 30% by Corporates are looking to improve CSR performance data is the convincing factor.
A challenging task By definition, lost fishing gear is not immediately observable hidden beneath the water or on remote coast lines. The possible area it can be lost in is obviously vast the world s oceans! There is a huge range of type and circumstance for this gear
A coordinated approach Thousands of organizations world wide have pieces of information. Fisheries, recreational divers, beach clean ups, ocean cleanups, commercial operations, entanglement studies. All collecting related but differing data sets connected to lost fishing gear.

So what do we need to know? What type of fishing gear is it? Where is it? What is the impact? Where did it come from
What type of fishing gear is it? This is a really difficult question to answer Hard to have confidence in the answers even if you could get them
Characteristics of gear Facts regarding gear characteristics allow us to better determine gear type that estimates Mesh size, filament design, knot types and material all indicate how a net is used and the impact it might have
Everyone collects slightly different data An entanglement group might measure filament count A beach clean up group emphasizes total mass of gear type
We built data maps Translating each group s data structure into one standard format Thousands of overlapping partial records that begin to illustrate emergent information A core record of position, date and gear class (net vs pot vs fad etc.)

Building from here New data partnerships European Commission, Ocean Cleanup and more! Promoting characteristic data collection Providing tools and reporting to the wider community Research and analysis partnerships
New data tools Ghost Gear Reporter App Thousands of overlapping partial records that begin to illustrate emergent information A core record of position, date and gear class (net vs pot vs fad etc.) Potential to provide rich data
Data portal A home for wide variety of related data Resources tools and support for recording and investigating data Information & analytics produced from the data collected globalghostgearportal.net
The next steps Building data partner relationships Supporting the rollout of data best practices collection and usage Continue the conversation about types of data to collect Support formulation of baselines and monitoring progress both at UN level as well as for individual countries and companies. Have an up to date real-time wholistic picture of the ghost gear situation worldwide. Support best practice in corporate supply chains.
