The Mastermind Group Presents to DIGITAL SHIP CYPRUS Modern Seamanship from the owner s perspective Capt. Eugen-Henning Adami 3rd February, 2016
AGENDA Modern Seamanship from the owner s perspective History and Future Ship-owners will drive for remote diagnostics to assist the seafarers with electronic manuals The cloud technology will change seafarers profession The need of Balance between Robotic/IT and Seamen The future seaman/seawoman
History and Future Shipping 1.0 Sails as propulsion dominated for thousand s of years. The 19th century saw steam engines added to supplement the sails. Brunel s Great Western cuts in 1838 the Trans-Atlantic voyage time to New York in half. Shipping 2.0 Fossil Fuel dominates for two hundred years supported by the morse code, globalization and containerization. Eco-Ships and Smart ship solutions are being developed. Gas and Fuel cells are for propulsion sytems in use. Shipping 3.0 The Digital Shipping Age is coming, supported by satellite connectivity. Big Data Projects will be common very soon. E-Navigation, electronic Manuals, 3-D printing and vessel with minimum crew will become a necessity. The Owner of manageable data WILL BE A KING!!!! CSDB s!!!! W E N
Yesterday The success of the voyage depended on teamwork, hands-on knowledge of weather and currents. Seamanship, health and strength was a must.
Today The success of the voyage depends on IT skills, timely reporting to the office and charterer, completing checklists, filling data in plant maintenance software. Seamanship and hands-on knowledge is left to Wikipedia, Shipping Apps, Online Tutoring, Remote Diagnostics and Shipdex e-manuals etc.
?? Tomorrow??
Tomorrow IT providers and makers pressing owners to adopt the Shore Control Policy Look how small the ship is in this presentation! But can you see any seamen??? Seamanship will be replaced by BIG DATA SKILLS Shipbuilders Shipowners Crew???
The cloud technology will change seafarers profession The development will take up more speed. The Morse code dominated for 90 years ( ) The Telex dominated shipping for 54 years ( ) The Fax dominated shipping for 13 years ( ) Communication becomes even cheaper and faster. Independence from proprietary systems. Seafarers shall stay abreast with cheap new things like App s etc. Ships should use the same shore technologies. Ships need cybersecurity and data protection. Companies want their seafarers to enjoy the Internet.
Ship-owners will drive for remote diagnostic to assist the seafarers Availability of qualified service engineers is questionable Travelling costs and visa problems! Down-time is a loss of reputation! Manuals must be 100% and fully Electronically and Transmittable. Repairs require correct spares. Spares are not on shelves! Ports become more and more commercial and do not allow repair time. Hourly charges of $ happens already today at congested container terminals! Transparency of management and benchmarking by institutional investors will shorten off-hire times! Eroding crew skills calls for more intelligent diagnostics! Connectivity is getting better and more reliable by more providers entering the market!
The need of Balance between Robotic/IT and Seamen We need to strive for balance for a safe and sound operation!
The need of Balance between Robotic/IT and Seamen Monster or Freak Wave are no fairy tales. They exist! Published : m Vessels are designed for 10m wave height! Statistics show that waves are not getting higher but the frequency of high waves are increasing. We will always need seamanship and human skills to master the seas!
The need of Balance between Robotic/IT and Seamen Due to the mighty and still uncontrollable elements, certain controls MUST remain with the Master. Passage and voyage plan RPM/pitch and course Weather deviation or sheltering Damage control and emergency procedures IT tools shall however assist the Master in his duties. Voyage optimization, Trim optimization Weather forecasting Chart preparations, corrections Voyage and port documentation Bunker planning Noon reporting and office reports Troubleshooting and remote diagnostic
The future seaman/seawoman Will need to be: Very well IT Minded and Skillful Trained to handle Big Databases and Applications, like the old storekeeper, who was only good when he could handle stores/spares well. A good and fast Communicator able to understand how to handle commutation effective and efficient while always improving the moral on board and respecting the receipants. Able to understand when sensors give wrong readings! Able to judge the information and instructions from shore for correctness. The global eroding steamship skills are also the reason for less competent shore staff. Some instructions will be based from office database/optimization tools, which may have flaws. Masters may be requested to make use of the Overriding Authority.
