2 Page 2 Mobile Hotspots 101 By Lena Pham, Library Programs Consultant What is a mobile hotspot or Wi-Fi hotspot? These terms are often used interchangeably to refer to a location that offers wireless Internet or the device the enables access to wireless Internet. A short definition is that a hotspot is a physical location where people may obtain Internet access, typically using Wi-Fi technology. Through a 2015/2016 LSTA Pitch-an-Idea grant, the Tulare County Library produced a Rural Connectivity Manual, which provides basic information on what to consider when exploring Wi-Fi hotspot set-up for your library. This manual has been shared with libraries that participated in the Technology TNT for Libraries project and is now also available at Check it out to learn more! Rural Connectivity and Technology TNT for Libraries are projects supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Innovation Fest Do you have a library problem you've always wanted to fix? A great idea of how to make your library better? Maybe a better work flow, or a bookmobile tracking app, or improved event signage? The Alameda County Library invites you to come fix those problems and make those ideas a reality at the first annual Innovation Fest for Bay Area libraries on Friday October 21st, 8:30am to 4:00pm at the Castro Valley Library. The Fest is generously funded through the Pacific Library Partnership's "Innovation Grant" program. What is an "Innovation Fest"? It's an idea boot camp: eight hours dedicated to finding solutions for a library-related idea, problem, or long-standing pain point. It's an interactive learning experience, where attendees will be mentored by the best innovators in and outside of libraries on the best ways to turn their ideas into solutions. It's an experiential learning environment: attendees can share knowledge, collaborate in teams, and pitch their work to win prizes. It's an opportunity for libraries to share our common problems and come up with equally shared solutions. For more information check out our flyer, visit bit.do/ifest. When: Friday October 21st, 8:30am to 4:00pm Where: Castro Valley Library, 3600 Norbridge Ave, Castro Valley Who: Any Pacific Library Partnership Library staff can attend! For more information, contact Chris Kyauk, Alameda County Library, ckyauk@aclibrary.org

3 Page 3 ASSISTIVE LISTENING TECHNOLOGY: HEARING LOOPS IN THE LIBRARY Contributed by Warren Willard - Hearing Now USA About one in three people age 65 to 75 suffer from hearing loss. At age 75 and older almost 50% have significant hearing loss. The rapidly increasing number of Baby Boomer library patrons has increased the need to provide assistive listening technology in our libraries. Many libraries are turning to the proven benefits of Hearing Loop technology to serve hearing impaired patrons. When amplified sound is used during functions, many hearing aid wearing patrons experience great difficulty processing the spoken word. For many, if they are more than 6 to 8 feet away from the sound source (speakers) the spoken word becomes unintelligible. Assistive listening technology can make a big difference, and the most effective form is delivered by a long proven method called Induction Loop, or more commonly, Hearing Loops. Hearing Loops, long used in houses of worship and other venues, are being installed in increasing numbers in libraries nationwide. The Technology Interest Group meeting at this year s CLA Conference will feature a presentation highlighting the benefits of Hearing Loops as a means of equal hearing access in California libraries. Hearing Loops satisfy the need for compliance by public venues with the American Disabilities Act. For more information about this technology you may wish to visit the non-profit website: HearingLoop.org or visit us at the CLA Conference Exhibit Hall, Booth #525. How does a hearing loop work? A hearing loop is another name for an induction loop. This is a sounds system connected to a loop of wire that goes around a building or auditorium. The wire emits an electromagnetic signal that is received directly by hearing aids and cochlear implants.
