FIVE-YEAR TECHNOLOGY PLAN FOR LYON TOWNSHIP PUBLIC LIBRARY Marjorie O Donnel January,
Purpose The purpose of this plan is to define the key strategic technology initiatives for the Lyon Township Public Library for the five-year period January 1, 2017 through December 31, The Library is striving to be innovative, flexible and responsive in providing information resources, access, technology and services to our growing community. The goals outlined for the next five years will collectively help provide guidelines for providing high quality technology services for the patrons and staff at Lyon Township Public Library. Many of these goals are dependent on the outcome of the library millage, and may change depending on the results of that campaign. Goals Goal I. Improve technology for patron use. Timeline: Years 1-2 Replacement of 2 computers o Replacement of the two oldest computers (Career & Accessibility) which were purchased in 2011 and 2012, making them 5 and 6 years old. The recommended replacement timeframe for a public access computer is 3 4 years. These computers can be repurposed to replace the Walk Up station and to provide a backup in case of failure of another computer. Adding wireless printing to the copier. o More and more people are requesting the ability to print from their mobile devices. We can add the capability to the Ricoh copier through the Printer On Service. Timeline: Years 2-5 Add new services to provide additional value to library customers o Mobile HotSpot lending o Children s Tablets o Databases: Mango/Pronunciator/Rosetto Stone, Gale courses, Reference USA, Consumer Reports, Genealogy databases o More downloadable electronic media: OverDrive Advantage, Zinio & Freegal 2
Goal II. Improve technology for staff use. Timeline: Year 1-2 Replacement of batteries in battery backup UPS units o The batteries in the UPS units are several years old and due to be replaced. This ensures that staff are able to save their data in the event of a power failure, and for the Circulation Desk staff to checkout patrons in the building. Replacement of computers in case of failure o All computers are functioning well and should be able to last until we know the outcome of the operating millage. If computer failures occur, some component or new computer purchases might be necessary Investigation & training on new technologies for future library Timeline: Year 2-5 Investigate new technology for a potential new library facility o Mobile Circulation o Calendaring software: event & room scheduling, summer reading program o AV Systems o Timekeeping Goal III. Continued development of Teaching and Learning Technology Timeline: Year 1-2 Develop new proficiencies as patron needs expand o Explore new devices and apps. o Schedule one-on-one sessions to accommodate patron schedules and areas of interest o Explore new mediums of teaching that fit the needs of our patrons, including online classes and tutorials. Enlist outside resources to conduct classes on specific areas of interest o Internet security risks, investment analysis, new mobile devices, ereaders, etc 3
Timeline: Year 2-5 Investigate new program opportunities with technology for a new facility o Gaming o STEAM programs o Workshops Goal IV. Improve Telecommunications, Internal Network and Security Timeline: Year 1-2 Replacement of wireless access point o The current wireless access point is 8 years old and does not provide a strong enough signal to reach the study rooms at all times. Better technology is available in newer products that will extend the signal strength. o Newer products offer easier maintenance and the ability to limit bandwidth for wireless users to prevent the network being compromised by one or two people. Open DNS Filter o The current filter system is a free version of Open DNS, which is limited in capability. The subscription based service offers more capabilities including the ability to see content by device, and provides better ability to restrict content for CIPA compliance. Timeline: Year 2-5 Investigate new technology for a potential new library facility o RFID o Self Checkout o Device Lending o Expanded Wireless technology Goal V. Improve Library Website Timeline: Ongoing Continue to explore new web technologies that will improve our customers library experience. 4
Goal VI. Provide Staff Development Opportunities Timeline: Ongoing Continue to participate in training through and edtogo, and seminars to learn about new technologies, strategies, and system maintenance Attend training through TLN and other mediums to expand knowledge in new areas of interest and emerging technologies in preparation of new facility. Goal VII. Develop Technology Policies and Documentation Timeline: Ongoing Maintain adequate documentation for the network o Emergency support numbers for consultants and technology staff o Network settings including IP information and a network diagram o Hardware inventory including warranty information o Software inventory including license information and expiration dates o Document Administrator user names and passwords and other critical secure information that only the administrator and one other secure person are aware of. 5

Because technology changes rapidly over the years, and because of the uncertainty of the library s future, the plan will be reviewed and updated annually to reflect any new changes and to adjust any necessary budget requirements. Our focus will be on maintaining and preserving our current technology so that it will last until a decision is made regarding a new library. We will make incremental improvements and replacements where necessary. We will also work to improve our Library marketing through improvements to our website and the continued use of electronic marketing mediums. This Technology Plan is a living document that will be amended as we move forward and our technology needs change. 6
