1 1 Instructions for using The George Institute s Data Collection App Version 1.2 Contacts Please contact Lizzy Dunford edunford@georgeinstitute.org.au or if you have any questions. Photos need to be uploaded on the same day they are collected, just to minimize any problems with the iphone. Downloading the app Go to the itunes store and search for George Institute. You should see the Data Collector App as one of the options: Click on the FREE button and then INSTALL APP. You will then be prompted to enter your Apple ID and password. Do this and the app will begin installing on your phone. If you already have the app installed and just require an update, please go to the App Store and download the latest version. Page 1 of 10

2 2 Setting up the app Step 1: Open up the Data Collection App. Step 2: When you first load the App, the following message will appear. Please click OK. Step 3: Fill in your address on the Welcome Screen by clicking in the field as indicated in the red circle below and then click Done as indicated in Blue in the second photo below. Page 2 of 10

3 3 Step 3: Ensure the correct country from which you are collecting data is indicated. For this to occur, Location Services must be turned ON in your settings. If Location Services is turned OFF, the message displayed in the first image below will appear circled in red. You need to follow instructions to ensure that location Services are enabled in your settings as per the second picture below. Page 3 of 10

4 4 Collecting photos of supplements Step 1: Scan the barcode of the product by holding the iphone over it. A green outlined box will appear when then camera has detected a barcode. Step 2: Take a photo of the front of pack. If there is a lot of text on the package, please feel free to take more than one photo of the front of pack to ensure you have captured all required information. Page 4 of 10

5 5 Step 3: You will be given the option to retake, use or complete the photo taking process. If the photo is blurry, click Retake and try again. If the photo is usable, click use. Step 4: The second photo should be of the product s component list (that is, the list providing information on the amount of each component present within the product). If the photo is blurry, click Retake and try again. If the photo is usable, click use. Please note that for the component list, numerous photos may be required for products that have a large number of ingredients. Please feel free to take photos of smaller PARTS of the components list if necessary. The most important thing is to be able to read the words/numbers. Page 5 of 10

6 6 Step 5: The next photo should be of the product s ingredients (if separate from the components list). If the photo is blurry, click Retake and try again. If the photo is usable, click use. Step 6: The next photo should be of the product s dosage information (if separate from the components list). For example Adults take 2 tablets in the morning / If the photo is blurry, click Retake and try again. If the photo is usable, click use. Page 6 of 10

7 7 Step 7: You can continue taking photos as per the previous steps if you require additional photos of things (for example, maybe 2 photos are required to capture all of the label). Please ensure you take photos of ALL text and ALL parts of each product. A tip for this is to take photos of each face of a product. So the front, back and sides of the package. Once you have taken all the photos you need for a particular product, click Done. Step 8: You can now either begin the process for another product by scanning the barcode and going through each of the steps again, or you can choose to upload your photos at any time. I suggest you continue scanning and taking photos of products and upload them when you have access to wireless internet to ensure that your internet usage on the phone and your phone battery are not exceeded. Uploading photos Step 1: Ensure you are connected to a wireless internet connection. Step 2: When you are ready to upload your photos, click on the Upload button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. The number in brackets (e.g. in the picture below it says 3) indicates the number of photos that will be uploaded. Page 7 of 10

8 8 NOTE: If you try to upload photos without a wireless connection, the message below will appear. Please collect data for as many products as you can and upload them when you are connected to wifi at a later time. Step 3: During the upload process, the screen will appear as per the following image. Page 8 of 10

9 9 Step 4: The next screen should appear when all photos have finished uploading: Problems during upload can occur if the internet connection is interrupted. If internet connection is interrupted during upload the following message will appear: Page 9 of 10

10 10 Final step: After each upload, please check the upload log. To do this, click on the Settings button which will take you back to the main log in screen. Please click on View Upload Log (circled in red below). You should then be able to see a log of all product uploads. The most important thing to look for is a green square with Upload Finished. If there is an interruption with internet connection during uploading, the log will show this in red see the second photo below. If you have any technical problems, please contact Lizzy immediately.
