How does Blogging work? Class Blogmeister For Teachers This is the login screen of Class BlogMeister You can find this site at: You will login with your Name and Password on this screen. ( I will create this for you) Your login name is: Your password is: Another way to get into your blog is: Go to Go to your school s page. Go to the Computer Lab Links Click on the Classroom blogs link Find the link to your classroom blog. To get to the Edit Mode of your blog, go to the upper left corner of this screen and click on Login.
Once you login, you are into the EDIT MODE of your blog. The top of the screen will look like this: It is here that you get a bit of control over what your blog will look like. Choose a template of your choice. There are not a ton of templates to choose from. Moving down the screen, you will see this gray bar. This is where you manage or control your blog. Let me break down the options on this bar. Articles: it is essential that you understand the difference between ARTICLES and COMMENTS when using Blogmeister. I find the difference hard to grasp at first. When looking at the home page of your blogmeister blog, The teacher prompt about the Lost Boy is an article. People/students have the ability to Comment on an Article. To write a comment about this Article, the student would click on the word Comment and then be able to write a comment. (Refer to the student handout about Creating Comments) By clicking on the Articles tab, you have the ability to create these Articles (or Teacher Prompts). The screen will look like the image to the left. You will title your article and then write your article in the Text Box.
Since you will want control over the Student s comment, DO NOT check the Unrestrict Comments box. When your Article is ready to be posted to your blog, check the Publish checkbox. Click Save. If at any time you want to delete one of your articles and the comments associated with it, you can do that from the list of Blog Articles listed at the bottom of this screen. The Control Panel is where you enter your Name, , Password, Blog Title, etc. You will probably go here initially to change setting that I have set up for you and then probably not revisit this area again.
Once in the Class Panel, you will start by choosing the class that you want to manage. Basics Control Panel You can set up a class password. The controls it gives you are: students would need to enter that password before publishing a comment and also could be required to type in the password before reading parts of the blog. You will need to decide if those are controls you want set in place. Then click Submit. Publish Control Panel Here you will determine which level of security your want on student access to the blog. Decide if students have access after teacher approval and if the students will need to enter the class password. Make your choice and click Submit. Comments Security Control Panel In the Comments Security Control Panel, you will determine what controls you have in place for students writing comments in your blog. Make your choice and click Submit.
Display Names Control Panel This control panel determines how student s names are displayed. Class Blogmeister suggests that to be in accordance with the Children s Internet Protection Act (COPPA), all students under 13 be names with a pseudonym or alias. Therefore, students remain anonymous in your blog. If that is the naming process you use, You will want to display Full Name since it is not the student s real name. Class Blogmeister also gives you the option of showing First Name & Last Initial or First & Last Initial. Click Submit. Class Roster Control Panel Students ONLY NEED to be entered into the Class Roster if they are going to have their own blog page and be entering their own blog articles. This is the control panel where you will add your student s names and passwords. Remember, when using pseudonyms or alias names, that is what you type in for the student s Whole Name. You will need to keep your own record of which student is which pseudonym. Each student should have a unique password. addresses are not required, therefore I suggest you leave that blank. You can add or delete students at any time.
NOTE: For your own organizational purposes, create a list of pseudonyms for your students so that when they log into the Add Comments screen, they can type in their pseudonym name. Pseudonym here! No Needed Using the New Approval Tool, this is how you will approve your students Comments and Articles or Blog Entries. Click on the type of student post you want to approve. As students finish or submit a comment, it will show up on this screen. *** As of today (4/2/07) I am noticing a small glitch in the Approval tool. I will Class Blogmeister to see if there is a fix. The glitch is: When the student submits their comment, it is appearing in the Approval Tool either 2 or 3 times. YIKES! Be aware! If you approve the first message, delete the next occurrences or you will post duplicate comments. I will update this handout when this is fixed. Click on the student s comment to view their comment. You will have the choice to Approve, Hold, or Delete the comment or article. Note that the student s comment appears at the top of the Approval Tool and the original Article appears at the bottom. Continue through the list of Comments or Articles that need teacher attention. Student comment waiting for approval Original Teacher Article
Clicking on View My Blog takes you out of Edit view of your Blog and into the view that students will see (Home View). When logged in as yourself, and you are viewing your Blog in Home view, you have the ability of returning to Edit View by clicking on Edit in the upper left corner. If you are approving student entries while students are working in the blog, they will need to Refresh their internet window periodically to see the changes you make or the Approvals you make. Refresh button on Toolbar Documentation will give you access to the help provided by Class BlogMeister. Click on Logout when you are done with your Blog Session.
To Display Blog Articles for More Than One Class You will have one blogging website. However, to have different blogging questions for different classes, you will have the students go to your blog and look at the Teacher Entries area of the main screen. By clicking on the blog title, that will get them into their specific class s blog article. Blog Management Tips By clicking on the Articles tab, you will be able to get to the Edit Blog Article screen. GO to the bottom of this screen to see all articles listed on this blog. Delete an article by clicking on Delete X to the right of the Article Title. Click on the Triangle in front of the Article title to expand the article and see all posted comments You can Edit, Hide, or Delete Comments here.
