2 ANIMA at a glance Duration: 4 years, 7.5M funding from EC started the 1 st October 2017 A clear-cut objective To develop new methodologies, approaches and tools to manage and mitigate the impact of aviation noise, enhancing the capability to respond to the growing traffic demand, also considering 24/7 operations A wide consortium gathering a critical mass of experts & stakeholders 22 partners from 11 countries, including airports

3 What is ANIMA? ANIMA is not a technology-oriented project: No reduction of noise at source, no TRL, no demonstrator ANIMA focuses on people & communities. Itaimsat: Mitigating and/or managing annoyance for given levels of noise through various strategies Further understanding the rationale for annoyance beyond noise (especially on non acoustical factors) Providing associated tools that could be used either by aircraft designers and noise experts, or to heighten the proficiency of non-specialists ANIMA assumes that : Reducing noise only does not lead by itself to mitigate annoyance Engaging communities is a key-factor for increasing well-being & quality of life New Noise Reduction Technologies or Aircraft Architectures will be efficient with regard to annoyance only if coming along with communication campaigns

5 Other projects The typical workflow of ANIMA Imagine scenarios with relevant aircraft Compute the noise patterns of these scenarios (& develop the required tools) Imagine new scenarios with new NRTs / architectures based on annoyance consideration I m not a robot, just a program Make & Analyze studies (new & old) to better understand factors of annoyance Predict the annoyance endured by given profile through a Virtual Resident (& develop the V.R. first) Enrich the European Roadmap on aircraft noise with knowledge on annoyance

7 Example of related tasks to achieve within ANIMA Questioning the relevancy of existing indicators with regard to annoyance Revisiting previous studies and launching new surveys to evaluate previous interventions in improving quality of life Attempt to find out if previous measures taken to lower exposure actually led to improving Quality of Life. Developing awakening indicators and protection regime for night noise Present indicators for night protection zones are equivalent to continuous sound pressure levels partially combined with certain numbers above thresholds (NAT). They are very poorly correlated to sleep quality, awakening reactions and other physiological data.they will be revisited. Refining our knowledge on annoyance by innovative ways Measuring the effectiveness of a communication campaign in lowering annoyance Surveying expression of annoyance before and after a communication campaign. In other words, does communication matter? And where? Testing auralisation and visualisation tools to engage the airport community Checking if the possibility given to people to immerge through virtual reality in existing or future traffic and assess directly its noise impact like-at-home or like-at-work strengthens their trust in authorities and/or the feeling that they are able to cope with changes Collecting expression of annoyance through mobile data (pilot study) Developing and using a mobile app to record expression of annoyance and to correlate them with dynamic noise maps around airport and possible social engineering through social media.

Increased tolerance toward possible traffic growth through raising awareness and dialogue engagement Airport managers and local authorities Exemplified (and specific) best practices of noise mitigation and management to implement toward communities Capacity to test scenarios for future development on the standpoint of annoyance or implement annoyance-driven improvement of their local traffic Community-proven recipes for the optimal implementation of noise regulations (ICAO, national, local)
