3 Factories of the Future From FP7 to Horizon 2020 Progress It is the FoF PPP that achieves the highest level of overall industrial participations when considering the combined participation of both large industry & SMEs Final Assessment of the Research PPPs in the Recovery Plan (EC, 2013) Success under FP7 has resulted not only in continuation but also evident increased interest in participation 151 projects with participation of 1,000+ organisations from 21 countries 200+ SMEs Projects have generated spin-offs such as Femtoprinter Majority of projects involve demo activities

4 Factories of the Future From FP7 to Horizon 2020 Progress It is the FoF PPP that achieves the highest level of overall industrial participations when considering the combined participation of both large industry & SMEs Final Assessment of the Research PPPs in the Recovery Plan (EC, 2013) Balance between research & demo elements has proven to be effective & appropriate for generation of industrial participation & future impact of the programme s results I4MS: Integrated projects have launched minicalls = oppportunities for SMEs to experince European research projects in over short period Commission: Increased inter-dg cooperation ensuring linkages to FoF-related policies & actions DG RTD (Research, DG CNCT (ICT), DG ENTR (Enterprise & Industry) & DG EAC (Education)

5 Beyond the Factories of the Future PPP Can we do more? Work on technology transfer & project clustering in order to get a higher impact Understand reality of Smart Specialisation to link with potential funding & impact opportunities Higher TRL level: how far can we go? Greater focus on market-relevence Education and Entrepreneurship: our community is working on the EIT KIC on Added Value Manufacturing

6 Factories of the Future 2020 Recap: Roadmap to 2020 Factories of the Future strategic research agenda = Factories of the Future 2020 Covers the period Six research priorities (or domains ) using the technologies and enablers identified to overcome challenges facing European manufacturing Annual research call topics issued by European Commission are based upon this Developed by EFFRA in cooperation with manufacturing industry and the Commission: Input from small, medium & large European manufacturing companies & research organisations Two public consultations Refinement ongoing

9 Factories of the Future 2014 Call: Outcome Initial conclusions can be drawn from first Factories of the Future call under Horizon 2020 High level of interest & proposal submission Factories of the Future partnership very popular Fist call to be supported by EFFRA s Innovation Portal (online brokerage and data) Example of popularity and interest: 73 proposals submitted in response to FoF (Manufacturing processes for complex structures & geometries with efficient use of material)

10 Factories of the Future 2014 Call: Outcome Standards of proposals submitted very high Apparent low success rate due to high number of proposals. Not unique to Factories of the Future PPP Given the popularity of PPP and growing interest, the low success is an issue of concern Many high quality proposals above threshold but could not be funded 28 Projects expected to be launched: 20 NMP (of which 2 will be CSAs) 8 ICT (of which 1 will be a CSA)

11 Factories of the Future 2016/2017 Defining the Strategic View EFFRA is working to define a strategic view for 2016/2017 Launched open European public consultation online to identify priorities of Factories of the Future 2020 Respondents reflect nature of FoF programme EFFRA-FoF consultation resulted in the identification of the main drivers of progress in manufacturing technologies Feedback per Organisation Type Academ Industry Large Industry SME Other RTO

12 Factories of the Future 2016/2017 Defining the Strategic View Results of the consultation will be analysed EFFRA will continue the dialogue with both the broad European manufacturing community (members & non-members) Findings will be presented to the Commission at the Factories of the Future PPP Partnership Board. Outcomes of first call under Horizon 2020 will be taken into account

13 Factories of the Future Increasing Impact Key task for future is to increase impact of PPP and project results. Clear from success under FP7 that market-uptake continues to represent a challenge needing to be addressed within context of impact. In 2015 five CSA projects will commence work with aim of increasing impact of Factories of the Future partnership FoF-Impact (Horizontal work & tech transfer EFFECTIVE (Consumer goods/fashion industry) Co-FACTOR (Smart components in manufacturing) FoFAM (Additive manufacturing technologies) FOCUS (Areas including zero defect & robotics) Close collaboration between these projects.
