10 2015 Assessment of Progress towards the dB target Knowledge Base EV Benefits from the achievements of the OPENAIR project as well as interim results from CLEAN SKY in specific areas related to business jets and regional aircraft. OPENAIR: 15 Generation 2 Noise Reduction Technologies have achieved TRL 4 /5 through large scale testing in wind tunnels and/or dedicated engine fan or exhaust rigs - Technologies aimed primarily at Short-Medium Range and Long-Range aircraft fitted with advanced ducted turbofans. Through CLEAN SKY, additional efforts reached similar TRL achievements on complementary noise reduction solutions aimed at Regional Aircraft (low noise landing gear and highlift devices) and Business Jets (U-Tail). In addition to technology solutions, CLEAN SKY will also bring further consolidation of noise abatement procedures benefits.

11 2015 Assessment of Progress towards the dB target Conclusions & Recommendations EV A typical 2.5 db additional benefit relative to the 5dB already consolidated at TRL 6 can be expected from Generation 2 Noise Reduction Technologies, provided such solutions mature to TRL6 in time for Relative to the ACARE noise target of -10dB per operation, the aircraft noise research effort can be considered as generally on track It will still require significant support in remaining years before 2020: Bring most promising Generation 2 noise reduction technology totrl6, through appropriate full scale validation effort across the board (engines, nacelles, landing gears, airframes). Success Conditions Very significantly increase the effort dedicated to Low Noise Aircraft configurations noting that whilst programme prospects are good concerning novel engine architectures, the effort on aircraft configurations is lagging behind. Take advantage of the sustained effort on low noise operational procedures to consolidate wider implementation capability.

14 Recommended Strategy for Future Steps EV In January 2014, EV held its 36 Month Project Review with the EC. Issues associated with the implementation of the recommended strategy aimed at the 2020 and 2035 / 2050 Aviation Noise ACARE targets were discussed. At the EC request, was asked to explore if the format of the Coordinated Research and Innovation Action would fit the implementation of the noise research agenda aimed at the 2035 timeframe, including the establishment of a Coordination Action that would supersede EV at the end of the current CA project.

19 2015 Assessment of Progress towards the 2050 target Recommendation for Future Steps EV Considering evidence of increased sensitivity to noise in local communities impacted by aviation operations,, it is essential that a greatly expanded effort is launched at the earliest opportunity to address the key aspects of noise effects and impacts and ultimately support the implementation of successful policies complementing the technological achievements expected to be realised.
