7 TNO IN THE EU TNO STRATEGY TNO strategy plan sets out a strategy on internationalization with a focus on the EU European Union research projects complement the national innovation and knowledge-building programme Co-operation with counterparts and businesses throughout Europe facilitates the research exchanges needed to achieve international excellence and impact In 2021 the EU s current Horizon2020 research programme makes way for the ninth Framework Programme (FP9). For TNO this offers opportunities to better co-ordinate research as part of the national, regional and European programmes

25 ONGOING AND PAST PROJECTS - LESSONS LEARNED In general it is observed that Time flies Expectations and ambitions are high Changes in (internal and external) positions complicate communication Diversity in project partners brings in valuable expertise and ideas, but also complicates collaboration Trend towards much competition in broad tender scopes

26 ONGOING AND PAST PROJECTS - ACHIEVEMENTS Actual achievements via development and benchmarking of tools and models in TNO and ECN projects Long term R&D collaboration with key R&D parties in EU: knowledge exchange and joint technology development WALiD, NATURAL on material degradation models and validation of TNO Wind Turbine Benchmark Exercise on Mechanical Loads (WTBE/ML) and AVATAR on aero-elastic and aerodynamic models and benchmarking of ECN Key enablers for success Joint goal and intra-project dependencies Balanced consortium with both well-known and less-well-known partners Pro-active project management by experienced coordinator

27 FUTURE POSSIBILITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN EU PROJECTS IN OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY Active contribution in EERA JP Wind Energy, ETIP Wind, NWEA, and WindEurope. Via dedicated EU officers and EU oriented experts Maintaining and improving relations with other stakeholders Two roles foreseen From TNO perspective joining initiatives is preferred TNO and ECN together have a more dominant position and can use network, system competence and in-depth expertise to be leading in specific technology developments Survey of last period of H2020 opportunities ongoing

28 FUTURE POSSIBILITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN EU PROJECTS IN OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY SET-Plan implementation offers opportunities for applied research organizations Accelerate the energy system transformation and create jobs and growth Sustain technological leadership by developing highly performant renewable technologies and their integration in the EU s energy system Reduce the cost of key technologies Several TNO technologies that we would like to develop together with R&D and industrial partners Focus on improving safety, reliability and performance of operations on/beyond wind farm level Focus on safe and sustainable human operations Focus on enabling and demonstrating technologies for deepwater floating wind energy TNO and ECN offer support for possible actions to promote offshore wind energy interests
