5 New EC initiative: Materials Characterisation Cluster Kickoff meeting Brussels Specific aims of the cluster, in the field of materials characterisation Science and technology to increase competitiveness of European industry Bridging R&D in the fields of nanotechnology and materials to close-to-market activities in Europe ( research to market ) utilize European resources (infrastructure hubs and their organization, competencies, etc.) in a better way

9 Use of the characterisation results in material and process simulations is essential. New approaches for material testing, modelling and model validation are needed. Performance and reliability of products depends on physicsbased modelling and accurate material property knowledge. Local material characterisation in terms of property determination for material constitutive laws. Multi-scale modelling requires multi-scale materials data and respective characterisation techniques. 6/13/2015

12 Brussels Meeting Potential mission and tasks of (Nano)characterisation hubs for Europe (proposal E. Zschech) Proposal: Smart Specialization Concept develop a Materials characterization Initiative for Europe with hubs in this network (with European User Centers as one component) Strategy of infrastructure development and use, considering industrial requirements Mission / Tasks (Proposal): Customer-oriented Center of Competence in the field of (nano)characterisation in general and in 2-4 topic areas in particular Network within Europe to other centers with key competence in complementary topic areas European User Center (with clear organizational structure) Strategy for investments and for future topic areas needed (models, on European level, in combination with regional resources) Strategic partnerships with industry, to identify the industry needs (surveys e. g. Fraunhofer DFCNA 2010/2015 -, workshops, etc.) and to provide an advantage to industry Excellence in research, including European projects Fraunhofer IZFP-D NANOANALYSIS
