1 SET-PLAN IMPLEMENTATION The Steering Group of the SET-Plan in its last meeting on October 28 th, 2010 agreed to speed-up the execution of activities of the Implementation Plans (IPs) of the European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs). It was decided to collectively identify the possibilities for launching joint actions between Member States and/or Member States and the European Commission. The mapping exercise carried out through this questionnaire builds upon this decision of the Steering Group. It aims to identify topics for leveraging best ongoing efforts with complementary joint actions, as prioritized by the Implementation Plans. In this phase the mapping will focus on projects and activities with a total budget higher than 0.5 M. We trust that you also consider the success of this exercise important for the immediate implementation of the SET-Plan. Telephone number: (+34) Fax: (+34) /06/ months SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION Provide a short abstract of max. 100 words The consortium composed by companies specialising in offshore wind energy technologies have joined forces on the Azimut. Offshore Wind Energy 2020 project, for the purpose of generating the know-how required to develop a large-scale marine wind turbine using 100% Spanish technology. The project will involve a total investment of 25 million euros over the next four years. The initiative is designed to establish the technological groundwork for the subsequent development, in around 2020, of a large-scale offshore wind turbine. The programme s initial objectives call for developing a turbine with unit capacity of 15 MW that is capable of overcoming the technical and financial hurdles currently limiting the rollout of offshore wind energy. PROJECT GOALS & OBJECTIVES Goals: Indicate main qualitative goals The programme s initial objectives call for developing a turbine with unit capacity of 15 MW that is capable of overcoming the technical and financial hurdles currently limiting the rollout of offshore wind energy. 3 Objectives: Indicate quantitative objectives (similar to KPIs of the Implementation Plans of the EIIs). Also indicate intermediate milestones where applicable. Assumed state-of-the-art: Describe quantitatively the state-of-the-art that the project objectives are based upon Achievements so far: If intermediate results are available, please indicate the current achievements (qualitative and/or quantitative) Azimut. Offshore Wind Energy 2020 project purpose is generating the know-how required to develop a large-scale marine wind turbine using 100% Spanish technology. Quantitative objectives: - Research new wind energy capture technologies specific for offshore applications to minimize energy cost and increase reliability. - Research new generation and conversion methods for large-scale marine wind turbines in short periods of time and with a 50% reduction of commissioning and operation costs. - Research new structures and wind turbine platforms. - Research new construction, operation and maintenance methods for offshore wind farms. - Research technologies to integrate satisfactorily big scale offshore wind farms in the distribution network. There are several initiatives related to offshore technologies development in order to achieve the technological knowledge to implant successfully offshore wind farms. In the European Framework there are important project in execution such as UPWIND, DOWNWIND (demonstrative project), BEATRICE (Scotland), ALPHA VENTUS (Germany), HYWIND (Norway) and MARINA (Marine Renewable Application Platform)(Spain). Regarding national initiatives there are several R&D projects previous to AZIMUT: EOLIA, WINDLIDER, EMERGE and MARINA. Project under execution. There are not significant results. See a sample of these in the document attached: Press clipping 13dic2010 ENGLISH.p The project will be presented in several conferences although the selection of them is still under way. TOWARDS COMMERCIALISATION Indicate (new) products and/or services expected from the project. Are new business models required for commercialisation of the project results? Highlight expected commercialisation benefits, e.g. patents, spin-offs, new products, business partnerships AZIMUT is an important opportunity for the Spanish wind industry to obtain the necessary knowledge to promote, build and exploit offshore wind farms in the future in an efficient, secure and environmentally friendly way. The most important benefit will be the capacity to offer electric energy from wind energy power plants, with competitive costs due to the development of a largescale wind turbine for offshore applications. Some of expected results are: - New products. The Azimut project will develop the technologies that will be needed in the companies new products. These new products can be summarised in: offshore wind turbines, electrical infrastructure for offshore sites, massive energy storage systems, offshore foundations and substructures. - New procedures and services: offshore construction and installation systems, operation and maintenance services for offshore plants - New patents: the project foresees to claim an average of 15 patents per year. 5 SYNERGIES WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION PLANS OF THE EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL INITIATIVES NETWORKING KNOWLEDGE SHARING Contribution to/relevance with the IPs: To your opinion, to which activities of the IPs of the EIIs is this project related to? Indicate contributions/ complements. Please note that reference here is made to the activities of the IPs as published in activities/implementation-plans Azimut will contribute to the following IPs: Large scale turbines and innovative design for reliable turbines rated MW (around 30% of Project Budget and public funding) Improved reliability of large turbines, and wind farms (around 38% of Project Budget and public funding) Standards for safety and operation, including standard safety factors (around 13% of Project Budget and public funding) Combined solutions for wind farm grid connection and interconnection (around 19% of Project Budget and public funding) Potential synergies with other projects and activities: Can you identify any other project(s) in your country, another MS or at European level that could be synergetic with this project? Azimut has identified the following projects that could be synergetic: WINDLIDER. Technology leadership in wind technolog y. Funded by CDTI, Spain. The project is aiming at researching on modelling technologies for10mw wind turbines. The results of this project are partly used as input for Azimut EOLIA. Technologies for Offshore Wind Farms in deep water. Funded by CDTI, Spain. The aim of the Eolia Research and Development Project is to develop the proper technology for implementing deepwater offshore windparks (in water over 40m deep). The results of this project are partly used as input for Azimut OCEAN LÍDER funded by CDTI, Spain. The project is focuses on the alternative uses of the wind floating platforms. Results from this project are being used as input for defining researching lines in Azimut. EMERGE Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology. The project aims at demonstrating technologies that will contribute to the development of deep water osffhore. Results from this project are being used as input for defining researching lines in Azimut. TWENTIES. Transmission system operation with large penetration of Wind and other renewable Electricity sources in Networks by means of innovative Tools and Integrated Energy Solutions. Funded by EC. The project is aiming at demonstrating by early 2014 through real life, large scale demonstrations, the benefits and impacts of several critical technologies required to improve the pan-european transmission network, thus giving Europe a capability of responding to the increasing share of renewable in its energy mix by 2020 and beyond while keeping its present level of reliability performance. MARINA First steps towards deep offshore wind/ocean energy conversion. Funded by the EC. The project will establish a set of equitable and transparent criteria for the evaluation of multi-purpose platforms for marine renewable energy. HYWIND. Funded by the EC. 6 ALPHAVENTUS. Funded by the EC. UPWIND. Funded by the EC. DONWIND. Funded by the EC. BEATRICE. Funded by the EC. Networking: Would you be willing to share results with the projects identified above? Indicate willingness to networking and also potential conditions Yes. Gamesa is willing to network with these and any other project. Links with the following projects have already been established: WINDLIDER EOLIA. OCEAN LÍDER EMERGE TWENTIES. MARINA Knowledge sharing: Would the abovementioned Networking necessitates a formal knowledge sharing agreement? To your view would this be the preferred route? The informal knowledge sharing procedures seem to be very efficient so far, so there is no need to establish formal agreements. Future steps: Are there any follow-up activities considered after the completion of your project? Is there a need to scale up activities in this topic at European level? The Azimut project will research on those technologies needed for future multimegawatt offshore WTGs. Results from the project are immediately transferred into the product development plans of the participating companies. Therefore, Azimut results will allow partners to launch several new initiatives. Although the project was launched in June 2010, two projects have already been defined: - One under the FP7 program, Call ENERGY One under the NER300 program. RESOURCES AND INVESTMENTS B. A pilot offshore wind farm will be necessary to test the different developments derived from AZIMUT project. In addition, some equipments will be necessary: - Test estation - frecuency-meter - Aerogenerator charges sensorization - Simulation programmes - Potenciostato multicanal - Bitrode - Monitorization equipment - Test equipment Some of these concepts are already available and others will be developed within the project and outside the project framework.
