3 alpha ventus and RAVE 2007 in Germany: Very ambitious offhore plans, but no offshore turbine German sites: far out and in deep water The offshore test field alpha ventus with the research initiative RAVE (Research at Alpha VEntus) was initiated by the German Environment Ministry Test field alpha ventus built and operated by three large electricity companies: EWE, E.ON and Vattenfall Demonstration of two different turbine types and two different foundation concepts Research initiative RAVE 3

Offshore wind power faces many important challenges RD&D needs data and experience from real offshore applications Research needs real application data Development needs possibility to test new solutions Demonstration for the market, which requires proven technology The earlier the research, the bigger the impact 4

12 RAVE RAVE has achieved its goals: Proven the offshore-capability of the 5 MW turbine class Facilitated further development of offshore wind technology in many areas Improved the knowledge about offshore wind utilisation Produced an invaluable and unique data set of measurements RAVE will continue, but the focus will move: from design and erection to operation and maintenance from demonstration to research 12

13 Needs for future Test Field Research Continuously demonstrate the latest technology Ensure a continuous technological development Test new, innovative concepts Gather research data from different technologies, different site conditions 13

14 Vision: European Test Field Research Test field research distributed over Europe with RD&D opportunities for industry and researchers RD&D integrated into commercial offshore wind farms Distributed over several sites and over time Dedicated to specific RD&D goals Conducted by industry, research and wind farm owner together Coordination between the test fields and RAVE is essential! 14

15 Technology Monitoring A clear understanding of the status and issues of the technology is needed for each wind farm and on a general level Collection of information and data across the industry To optimize maintenance and availability of specific wind farms Systematical collection and evaluation of operational experiences To answer fundamental questions on development of wind power offshore General monitoring So far six wind farm operators confirmed participation Core Data Event Data Data Pool Result Data
