INTRODUCTION TO OFFSHORE WIND
MARKET
Wind energy is 2 nd largest power generator in Europe 21 st April 2017 was first day without coal as a fuel for generation in the UK since the industrial revolution.
UK is location of largest investment in wind 20% of the entire UK's infrastructure construction contract value in 2016 came from offshore wind ( 4bn out of 20bn).
UK offshore wind will exceed 10GW by 2020 Wind energy produced over 10% of UK electricity in UK offshore wind capacity will exceed 10GW by 2020
The UK opportunity 1,502 offshore turbines now 5.4GW operational 10GW installed by 2020
Dramatic cost reduction - faster than forecast Innovation is key driver of cost reduction: Longer blades, novel foundations, more efficient cables All new technology must be tested and validated before commercialisation
PROJECTS
Projects 29 operational offshore wind projects in UK waters; Commissioned from early 2000 s to present day; 8 projects currently under construction; A further 18 projects have received planning consent*. Developers are typically multinational formerly state owned utilities, key names with active projects: DONG (Ørsted), SPR, SSE, E.ON, Vattenfall, Statoil, Innogy, EDPR, Red Rock Power, + other Europeans
Offshore wind project phases 5 to 8 years 1 to 2 years 20 to 25 or (?) years Project Development Construction Operation
Offshore wind capex Turbine Foundations Array cables Offshore substation Steps up array to export voltage Turbines 7MW to 9MW (10MW+ by 2023) 80m blades (100m by 2025) Steel towers Electrical offshore Electrical onshore Export cables Onshore substation Connects wind farm to national grid Export cables HVAC (some HVDC outside of UK) Foundations Monopiles (10 to 40m depth) Jackets (30m to 60m depth) Array cables 33kV or 66kV
Projects: Past, present and future Commissioning year Crown Estate leasing round Project size (MW) Number of turbines Turbine rating (MW) R1 < R ~ R ??? 15+? These are broad classifications there are exceptions
TURBINES
Offshore turbines: past, present, and future Existing fleet: 2 4MW Currently installing: 6 8MW Next generation: 10+MW Next generation Year Height 120m Capacity 10-14MW
Fabrication - blades LM Windpower s LM 88.4 P One set, of three blades, is capable
Turbines
Offshore turbines Looks simple right?
Offshore turbines
Operations and maintenance Optimised performance requires regular inspections and condition based monitoring of generating machinery and structures. Manual access offshore is expensive. With the world s largest offshore wind fleet, the UK is a world leader in offshore O&M.

TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS
Our testing and demonstration facilities We operate the largest concentration of multi-purpose offshore renewable energy technology test and demonstration facilities in the world.
Test facilities: Blades, Drivetrains, Electrical
Test facilities: Levenmouth 7MW, Offshore met mast, Docks
Technology demonstration at Levenmouth turbine Levenmouth turbine (Samsung prototype) ORE Catapult acquired in 2015 Open access Unique in scale Realistic offshore wind environment Prioritised non-invasive demonstrations initially 10 companies are demonstrating systems under first tranche Some examples on following slides
Sensor-Works Ltd & Turner Wind Service Demonstration of wireless vibration sensing Opportunity to develop commercial offer Investigate installation methodologies Real working environment Bluetooth LE IoT Sensor Gateway M-HAS Data Processor (Machine Health Assessment System)
Hydrasun Intelligent fluid condition Monitoring Systems (IMS) for lubrication oil Comprehensive monitoring of quality, and physical characteristics of lubrication oil System well established in the oil industry. IMS - reservoir sensor module (RSM), component condition sensor (CCS) and control cabinet (Hub)
SMART technology demonstrations in 2017 / 2018 SMART project will run for coming year Broader remit not limited to sensors / monitoring Examples of technologies may include: Access systems, Safety systems, Monitoring systems; Data science; Inspection technologies. This project is supported by Scottish Government
SMART Invitation open Further demonstrations ongoing and planned Scottish and UK benefit of particular interest We can provide commercial and practical validation Please come and talk to us the door is open
SO HOW CAN CATAPULT HELP?
INNOVATION CHALLENGES
Informing innovation: O&M Forum Discussion forum with UK offshore wind farm owner/operators Attended by offshore wind farm asset managers Outputs Valuable insight to help shape ORE Catapult activities Joint Industry Projects Innovation Challenges
Engaging the supply chain: Needs Driven Innovation Owner/ Operators Operational Issue ORE Catapult Innovation Challenge Call Supply chain innovators Ideas Innovations Collaborative Innovation Project External Funding Technology Solutions
Innovation Challenge Page Challenge areas launched and on website with Expressions Of Interest (EOI) process.
Challenge example: Internal blade inspection The challenge: Inspect sub surface defects in blades Defects can t be detected on painted surface only seen visually from inside Perform visual inspections and provide data on where defects are
Challenge example: Corrosion EDF sets corrosion challenge (with Innovate UK) 10,000 on offer for inspection and corrosion mitigation in monopile foundations offshore Corrosion within monopile foundations is a cause for concern for offshore wind farms. The main problem is a deviation from the original design assumptions made for early offshore wind farm projects. This predicted that the inside of the monopile would be completely air and water-tight, said EDF. Issues: Confined space Hydrogen Sulphide Source: ReNews 19th July 2016
Marine Growth on Jackets Current Method Time Consuming Vessel required Weather restricted Diver risk or expensive ROV setup CAPEX & OPEX Eliminate marine growth to reduce steel requirement at design phase for foundations
Case Studies: ATAM Group The Challenge Remote inspection and analysis of weld seam integrity on wind turbine towers - Reduce requirement for rope access ORE Catapult Support Access to full scale tower to carry out NDT inspection trial Supported demonstration Advisory on industry needs - Reduce cost - Increase the operational window
Case Study: SMAR Azure ORE Catapult Support Responded to Blade Innovation Challenge Identified funding avenues for feasibility study of novel blade technology Funding bid co-development Secured 3 rounds of Energy Catalyst funding (Innovate UK) Novel textile blade technology developed from sail design and manufacturing
