1 Schools Starpack Awards 2019
2 important dates Register online at: on or before 29 March 2019 Physical entries to arrive by 10 May Awards presentation on 26 June 2019 Schools Starpack Packaging Design Awards 2019 Packaging is a diverse and exciting industry Look around you. Packaging is everywhere! From the cleaning products we use to the cereal we choose, everything has been carefully packaged to get it safely from the factory to the shop shelves. Without even thinking about it, we have all been influenced to buy something because of the design of the packaging. The success of a product is largely down to the three main functions of packaging: preserve, protect and promote. The aim of the Schools Starpack Packaging Design Awards is to help students understand the work that goes into the packaging surrounding the products they consume and teach them about the vital role packaging plays in the consumer market. Entering the competition will also provide an insight into a career in consumer packaging design and encourage them to learn more about what is a creative and rewarding career choice. The award briefs are provided by industry experts from manufacturers to household brands and provide excellent opportunities for pupils and students currently studying at KS3, KS4 (GCSE s/ BTEC/NCFE Awards Levels 1/2) and KS5 (AS/A2/ BTEC Awards Levels 3). The judging criteria will consider the age and course level of the entrants. Entry is for an individual student s work. The Schools Starpack awards form part of an annual awards programme, which also includes the Student Starpack Packaging Design Awards for colleges and universities and the Starpack Industry Awards. AWARDS Following rigorous judging, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Commended certificates are awarded. All entrants receive a certificate of entry For each brief there are additional sponsor prizes - see each brief page for full details The sponsors have the right not to award a prize if they do not think the work put forward has reached the required standard. The Awards Presentation and Celebration will take place on 26 June 2019, at IOM3 Headquarters at 297 Euston Road, London.

Creativity and outside the box thinking for both the content and the pack Eye catching design/ graphics what makes it stand out? Consideration to seasonality and the Christmas gifting opportunity Cartonboard - material can be supplied by Graphic Packaging upon request Window material - material can be supplied by Graphic Packaging upon request 500 to the winning school. For guidance with the brief contact Kate Jackson / * Kate.jackson@graphicpkg.com FOOD-TO-GO PACKAGING TO PROMOTE HEALTHY EATING FOR CHILDREN Sponsored by Klöckner Pentaplast Kp is a plastics manufacturer with over 40 years experience designing and creating intelligent packaging to optimize the protection, preservation and presentation of food. From clam shell takeaway trays, to minced meat trays and strawberry punnets in the supermarket, we create packaging solutions used by millions of people across 70 countries. Additionally we manufacture barrier films and cling film to create the total pack solution on shelf. We champion the reduction of food waste with supermarkets, providing them with clever and innovative efficient packaging. Promoting healthier food-to-go choices for children is an important step in the challenge to improve health and wellbeing, and reduce obesity. Packaging has an important role to play in encouraging smart food purchases. Using thermoformed plastic, or plastic film, design and create inspirational packaging to appeal to children to ensure they make the right healthy food-to-go choices. Good visibility of the food contained Easy accessibility of product and portion control Appealing pack graphics to promote fun and education of healthy eating Packaging enables half now, half later eating e.g. part for lunch and part for afternoon snack Disposability, recycling or re-usability Thermoformed plastic components or flexible film to be used as the primary packaging, and to be at least 70% of the overall packaging. Other materials such as carton board or labels can be used as secondary packaging. Visit website for examples of thermoformed and film packaging and to learn about our commitment to a sustainable closed loop packaging system. 100 to the winning student submitting the best solutions using plastic film or thermoformed plastic components. 6 c KS3, KS4 (GCSE s/ BTEC/NCFE Awards Levels 1/2) D KS3, KS4 (GCSE s/ BTEC/NCFE Awards Levels 1/2) Reusable water bottle Sponsored by RPC Design Established in the UK in 1991, RPC is today a leading international design and engineering company in plastic products in packaging and nonpackaging markets, with centres of excellence worldwide and a turnover of around 3.9bn. There has been a lot of press coverage of the problems with single use plastic items and one of these is water bottles. We would like to look at a design for a reusable water bottle for children that can be engaging, fun, practical and sustainable. Thinking about using recycled materials, building in a play or fun element and making it practical (re-sealable, refillable, in built straw etc). Reduce plastic waste by designing a reusable water bottle that is both practical and fun. The water bottle: Must be made of plastic Must be easy to open, use and reseal Must be engaging or fun so children will be happy to use it and reuse it Must help sustainability so fully recyclable Don t lose the cap! How the materials are used and are they recyclable? How engaging is it for children? How practical is it to refill and reuse? What makes it different to anything already on the market? The bottle should be made of plastic. The main materials available are PET, Polypropylene (PP) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). All are easily and widely recycled. It would be great if students could show some understanding as to what properties the chosen material has and why they have chosen it. 100 for the winning individual and 400 for the winning school. For guidance with the brief contact Brian Lodge / * b.lodge@rpc-design.co.uk Entrapment Sponsored by The Packaging Society of IOM3 The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) is a major UK engineering institution whose activities encompass the whole materials cycle. It exists to promote the science, design, engineering and technology of materials, minerals and mining and their practical applications and facilitate qualifications, professional recognition and development, and to deliver knowledge, information and networking services. The Packaging Society is a division of IOM3. As well as providing benefits for members, the Society also contributes to a large training programme and is the driving force behind Starpack. The challenge for this brief is to design a piece of packaging that is both practical and visually interesting, made from composite materials. For example, you could trap seeds in paper pulp as a gift card or laminate threads within plastic to create a stronger shape to hold more fragile items. The aim is to experiment with materials to design and develop an effective and usable packaging concept. Any material may be considered but may be dependent on what resources are available to you within your education institution. Be creative and look to combine materials where appropriate to provide creative new directions for packaging. Innovative use of materials Practical solution that will contain a product Visual appeal Appropriate graphics/branding Justification for materials choices No restrictions on materials. 250 to the school with the best solution. For guidance with the brief contact Annette Bigglestone * annette.bigglestone@iom3.org
7 E KS3, KS4 (GCSE s/ BTEC/NCFE Awards Levels 1/2) F Years 9 and 10 Save the Ocean Fun Packaging with an important message Sponsored by Logoplaste Logoplaste are leaders in plastic packaging, providing an overall service for packaging R&D, in-house production and quality systems, backed by technical support and advice. It is estimated that up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic are entering the oceans every year and once in the ocean plastic can take centuries to break down. This can have a devastating effect on marine life and its environment, accumulating both out at sea, affecting coral reefs and being washed up on our beaches and holiday destinations. Aiming your design at children and young people, design a plastic beverage container that through its form and function can promote recycling and safe disposability in a fun and interesting way. Use innovative shaping and exciting graphics to give great shelf appeal and to convey a strong message to the consumer on how important it is that we Save our Oceans from the overwhelming problems of waste destroying the marine life and its environment. Innovative and creative form Fun and interesting components to the design Memorable message about recycling and disposability Shelf impact Functional and practical applications Dependent on school resources, models to be made out of an appropriate material to indicate or represent plastic. 400 to the winning school, plus an all-expenses paid visit to a Logoplaste manufacturing site for up to 30 pupils/students. This exciting opportunity is a tour of one of Logoplasts Hole in the Wall plants. Pupils and students will get to walk through the entire manufacturing process from incoming raw materials to finished bottles. to individual pupil/student unpacking asthma Sponsored by The University of Cambridge in conjunction with the NHS Designing Our Tomorrow (DOT) is an initiative from the University of Cambridge that brings together expertise from the Faculty of Education and the Department of Engineering to research and develop resources for teaching STEM at secondary level, as part of the mainstream curriculum. It puts authentic challenges and engineering practice at the heart of the learning experience. After the successes of the 2017 & 2018 Unpacking Asthma challenge, we are running it again for a third year. The 2017 winning design is in the process of being piloted within the NHS, with the 2018 winners due to attend a workshop to develop their ideas further. We are continuing to look to build on these successes by developing a portfolio of different solutions to help healthcare professionals with infant asthma treatment. Develop a packaging solution that helps reduce the anxiety of children under 6 who are having asthma treatment for the first time. The pack not only needs to contain all the items needed for asthma treatment but also needs to do it in a way that is fun and engaging for the child. The DOT challenge is different from other awards in that it comes with a full class set of resources to support teachers with helping students meet the challenge. The resources come as part of CPD training for teachers. There is a charge of 550 to cover the CPD and resources, and this package comes with 6 free entries. Winners will work with industry professionals to explore the potential of implementing their idea within the NHS. For guidance with the brief contact Melanie Smith * ms2357@cam.ac.uk For guidance with the brief contact Darren Wingrove * Darren.wingrove@logoplaste.com
